This is a suprise!. SQ last flew to Abu Dhabi in the late 1980s. Will be interesting to see how they go. Does Gulf Air fly AUH-SIN?

No. Only BAH-SIN-SYD daily using the 343.

Interesting seeing as how SQ is now flying DXB-JED, CAI and IST. And the plan on adding Moscow.

Mr Squares,

What's your next trip and routing?

Do you also fly the 744 (pax) with SQ?

Where have you been?

Do your regular trips affect your private/family life? I hope that's not too personal.

My schedule varies every month. As far as my job effecting my family life, it does. But, I am very lucky to have a supportive wife and family. They realize the sacrifices that they endure also allow them a lot of other people don't have. I have plenty of time off and the best thing is I never have to worry about taking my job home with me. Other than "jet lag" I don't have to worry about any job related issues!

Ah, I see.

When you're aboard your aircraft, while, say, taxiing or holding for take-off, are you able to recognise different types of aircraft? This might sound odd and a silly question, but other pilots I've spoken to have said that they wouldn't know a 737 from an M80. Surely they would have had a good interest in aviation before paying a fortune and making big sacrifices to become a pilot? Odd. Anyway, never mind.

does SQ have 5th freedom rights on the AUH-JED-AUH sector?

This is good news for AUH based pax heading to Australia, CGK, DPS and KUL via SIN. SQ should see decent yields and good loads year round on this flight.

SQ restarts SIN-KHI-LHE services with 3 weekly B 772s from Feb 1st.

obviously not as its a Pakistan domestic route...the SQ flight will be routed SIN-KHI-LHE-SIN on certain days and SIN-LHE-KHI-SIN on other days.

It's not really a surprise that they are going back to AUH as the Middle Eastern economies have been very buoyant of late. I am a bit surprised at AUH though as it is only a short drive to DXB and KWI and BAH seem more promising given that BAH is a financial center in the mid-east and that the Kuwaiti economy is doing very well. SQ also did not do too well the last time they were in AUH with I believe A310 flights via CMB some 10 years ago.

I wonder if this also means an increase in frequencies to JED on top of the existing SQ455/456 flights from SIN-DXB-JED where SQ apparently do not have traffic rights DXB-JED vv or are they to replace those flights?

SQ is already flying DXB-JED, so I guess I am a little confused with your post. What's your point?

The ABU-JED flights appear to be in addition to the DXB-JED flights. However, that could certainly change in the future, but right now both flights are in the CRS.

My point is that if SQ maintains those flights, frequencies to JED will double, if we consider the new flights via AUH.

I agree, Abu Dhabi is a big suprise. Those cities you mentioned and as well as Doha might have been a better option. I have my doubts as to whether this route will be profitable for SQ.

Nope, they also few SIN-CMB-AUH vv in the mid-90s and they pulled that flight after about a year.

SQ has started and cancelled pax services to AUH twice. I'm not optimistic!

Because KHI and LHE are in the same country, that would be 8th freedom not 5th freedom. Mostly likely, the answer is SQ do not have 8th freedom rights between KHI and LHE.

Nope... JED remains at 3pw, but intermediate point is changed from DXB to AUH.

The 3pw dropped from DXB will infact be taken up the the new Moscow extension.

Ssssooooo, from March..

3pw SIN-AUH-JED
3pw SIN-DXB-Moscow
3pw SIN-DXB-CAI
3pw SIN-DXB-IST

Can you please tell me what airline these pilots fly for as I will never fly them again! If as a pilot you can't tell planes apart even with all the exposure to them, you probably shouldn't be flying me anywhere!  Wink

I'm pretty sure that SIN-DOH will be added to the SQ route map. Doha is booming and there is a lot of traffic, only problem will be getting slots etc because of the disaster that is Doha Airport. For those of you who have not had the privillege the terminal is a tiny, cramped, non-functional space and there is only one (1) men's WC in the post imigration entire departures area open to the general public. Customs officers are rude and most don't speak English (hell some don't even speal Arabic that well  Smile )The apron is hideously undersized considering how large QR's fleet is.

I fully agree  Smile The airport is tiny compared to the QR fleet, at least a new airport is on the way  Smile

When did you travel to DOH?

I have no problems differentiating the difference between a 737 v. MD80. I sure wouldn't want to be in the same cockpit as those pilots, especially when you're looking for traffic!

Well, no it's not obvious! Many airlines fly domestic routes in other countries than their own! Albeit, namely I can only think of AB on the STN-GLA route, FR on the VBS-CIA route and CIA-BGY route.

That's because of the EU and the Schengen treaty, where any EU airline can operate within the EU. This certainly does not apply in other countries.

EU is right, but Schengen has nothing in common with it. The EU has a single sky policy, therefore the EU negotiated the treaty with the US. Outside the EU also Norway and Switzerland a part of it. Bulgary and Romania also joined because they will become a member in 2007. Not sure if others like Island and some Balcan states take also part.

OK, what about non eu destination routes, like BAH-DOH on BA, BKK-SIN on GF and other various airlines.

BAH-DOH and BKK-SIN are both international flights and would be considered 5th freedom to fly between those cities whereas KHI-LHE are two cities within Pakistan served by domestic flights and a foreign carrier like SQ would require 8th freedom rights to fly such a route and outside of Europe i dont think we would find any examples of 8th freedom.

Been through DOH a number of times. Flown QR to KTM, SAH, DXB, VIE, FRA, LHR ex Doha for a variety of different reasons. I also used to live in Bahrain when I was younger. I have seen some of the expansion plans for DOH and they look stunning. Very ambitious, fitting then that they are being driven by QR an ambitious beast in its own right!
