Donegal Airport - How Exciting Can It Be There!

Thu Jan 05, 2006 10:52 pm

An article in the Irish Times today says Donegal Airport, now just passing its 20th anniversary, had over 46,000 passengers in 2005. The highest ever number.

It also says there are 29 staff.

Now assuming operation for 364 days a year, that is 4.35 passengers per staff member per day. Cruel, place to have to work doubtless.

17 weekly departures means 884 departures p.a. Even if all 46.000 pax were on those scheduled flights, it would only make it 26 per flight. So not too exciting, me thinks  Smile

Wow... that brought back some memories !  old

Must have been around 8 or 9 years ago when I was invited on a "Fam Trip" by the Irish Tourist Board to visit the counties of Donegal, Sligo and Mayo - our trip began on a Loganair ATP from MAN to CFN (which was signed as "BUNBEG" on the check in desk) and was an excellent few days.

Don`t remember much about the flight - mostly low level across those emerald fields - but I can distinctly recall our approach to CFN across sheep filled fields and, on finals, whooshing over some local heads who were pointing up at us with a definite "W.T.F !!" look..  Wow!

Must have been the biggest monster they`d ever seen flying over.  Wow!

Seem to remember the airport being `cosy` and the baggage reclaim consisting of a dozen or so baggage trolleys being trundled out to the ATP, filled and rolled back again to us in the car park.

We came back from Knock Connaught, and, by comparison, the place looked the size of LHR !  Wink

Can`t recall the intevening days - but you have to remember it was Eire, we were guests of Bord Failte and that `hospitality` and `Eire` are the same words !  drunk

Slainte !

Any Rumours that CO will start a daily EWR next summer using a 752?  Smile
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Given the reference to the arrival of an ATP, I think not.

Seriously how long is the runway. Furthermore is there the demand.

How about a London flight? Aer Arran to Luton maybe (and even Manchester could be possible)

I say if you got Daniel O'Donnell in the waiting area to start some singing you would see the passenger numbers go from 46,000 to 1,000 (although all the passengers would be happy old grannies that would love to see wee Daniel and to have a cup of tea with him) Big grin
