Female Airport Names

Fri Jan 06, 2006 12:11 am

Just wondering how many international airports got female names after famous female pioneers, royals, etc. I don't think there's many. I just can think of two so far:

Tenerife - Reina Sofía
Istanbul - Sabiha Gökçen

Any ideas?

Amman - Queen Alia International Airport
Delhi - Indira Gandhi International Airport

When Diana, Princess of Wales died some were thinking of renaming Heathrow as Princess Diana International, or something along those lines.

Queen Beatrix Airport, Aruba
Princess Juliana, St Maarten

Some smaller airports..

There's an Amelia Earhart Airport in Atchison Kansas.

Nancy Bird Walton has a terminal named after her at Bourke airport NSW, Australia. QF's first A380 will carry her name as well.

Medellín City Airport is called Olaya Herrera.
Maracaibo Airport is known as "La Chinita" = Little Chinawoman, but I've told that name has nothing to do with a chinawoman.
Rio Hato Aerodrome in Panamá - site of a former US Military base - is named Cap. Scarlett Martínez.

Medellín City Airport is called Olaya Herrera.

But in this case Olaya is a surname. The name of the airport is Enrique Olaya Herrera (Hence EOH as its code)
Enrique Olaya H was a president of Colombia.

They should have named a terminal after her and not the whole airport. It is a nice idea.

How about ORY - Paris Orly? Orly is sometimes a female name.
Before MGA name was changed to Sandino International it was known as "Las Mercedes".
I think there's an airport on Puerto Rico called "Mercedita" - it's Ponce?

Arlanda is an skandinavian name of some kind. Can't say if it's female or male. For an spanish speaker sounds like a female name, doubt if there are girls named Arlanda in Latinamerica.

a few years ago there was a proposal to rename Auckland International Airport after Jean Batten , the female aviation pioneer ( and the first person to fly from the UK to New Zealand ), sadly they wimped out and made a messy compromise by just renaming the international terminal .

Let me put the record straight here.
La Chinita refers to the Catholic patron of Maracaibo city, the Virgin of Our Lady of Chiquinquira. Her facial features are that of a local indian (Chinese to many of European stock) and is affectionately known as "la Chinita" because of that.

Venezuela has another airport named after a woman: this is Las Piedras close to Punto Fijo next to the main oil refineries in Paraguana peninsula. The name is Josefa Camejo.

I'm not that well informed of Singalese history, Was Mrs Bandarnaike primeminister before or after Golda Meir of Israel?
Mrs Meir has not gotten an airport named after her (yet?).

Mrs. Golda Meir was PM of Israel from 1968 till the mid 70's when she resigned over differences with her cabinet.
Mirs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike was several times PM of former Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka after a name change in 1972. She was elected to office in 1960, thus becoming the first ever woman to head a government.
In the early 1970s the world had 3 main ladies as heads of government (not State, which is a different thing altogether): Indira Ghandi in India, Golda Meir in Israel and Sirimavo Bandaranaike in Sri Lanka. Worthy of note is the fact that the 3 of them were on a socialist - left-wing ticket !!

Isn't the airport in Colombo named after the father of Bandaranaike? She got a new name as she married anyway.

Yes and no. When you walk from the carpark past those little paying machines and then you walk into this area where there is elevators and vending machines. Just before entering that little room/area, you will see a sign that says 'Welcome to the Jean Batten international terminal'
