Victorville Observations

Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:13 am

I was in Victorville, California yesterday for the first time in about six months. I was somewhat surprised that there are approximately four times as many parked airliners as there were last time. Delta and United had the vast majority of airframes. Aside from the usual 727s and L1011s plus the newly retired 767-200s and 737-300s, there were quite a few Delta MD-88s and even some 757s (sorry I didn't get an exact count). I didn't realize Delta was parking these. Another interesting sight was an Ariana Afghan 757!
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

Delta's MD88s and 757s are there purely due to the slowdown in the winter months, combined with schedule/capacity reductions as part of the BK reorganization.

There are also some lease birds that are parked while lease renogiations are underway.

Pending recovery of the airline, and schedule increases for spring/summer, those birds will be back.

It's also possible some may have been parked pending a major MX event, and since the capacity isn't needed ATM, they've simply parked them 'til needed, and put off the MX (and the resultant expense) ...

Now the 762s, on the other hand, those are destined for ABX.

732s, probably, are destined for Coke cans.

Anything worth seeing from "The Mound?"

I will be in VCV next Tuesday and hope to do some shooting.
