The Icelandair holding company already owns Sterling 100% with some 30+ Boeing planes. So they have practically as many Boeing planes as Finnair has planes in total.
A 20% stake in Finnair is not a controlling stake.
It looks more like a strategic move with the aim to get better control of the Finnish charter market plus what charter business Finnair does in Sweden, and streamline it with the heavy Icelandic involvement in Danish and Norwegian charter business.
It may also mean that the scheduled services by Sterling, which was mostly inherited from former Maersk Air, will be better streamlined with FlyNordic, the Finnair LCC subsidiary.
It could also mean at a later stage that Sterling and FlyNordic would simply merge with Icelandair Holding and Finnair as fifty/fifty owners.
