World's most expensive landing airport is Osaka/Kansai. Second is Tokyo/Narita. Third is Hong Kong/Chek Lap Kok. I believe that Changi used to be at the tops but it reduced its fees so it's out of the list. (according to Hong Kong newspaper)

I think it's quite easy to understand why the Japanese airports are so expensive to touch, but why Hong Kong's nonsense fare rise in the economical crisis? Everybody else reduce their fares, but Hong Kong's transition from Kai Tak to CLK also raises the landing fee by more than 100%!! (according to Hong Kong newspaper)

Still, though... that's like charging each passenger $150 for the use of the facility. Even if you're using Hong Kong Dollars, that's down to about $20. Flat. Now I see why point to point travel is useful. You save money on landing fees.
Why doesn't the airport authority just charge the airlines for the use of the gate, a fee for ground control, etc.. maybe they could operate like the tolls in Europe and charge less during slack times (or more at night for airports in Orange County) Then pax could get better fares and airlines wouldn't get screwed.

hey everyone.
CLK has dropped their landing fees since the airport opened to atract more carriers to hong kong. (recent airlines may 16 PIA) . I suppose it is so expensive so that it can make up for the building of the airport, you still have to remember that the new west terminal has not even been built, and i suppose that maybe the landing fees are going towards the construction of it.
Im sure they will lower the fees later on.

KIX Vs ITM/OSA

Sun May 28, 2000 6:15 pm

On a nearly unrelated topic....

Even though landing fees are high at KIX (Kansai Int'l, near Osaka), air fares are usually cheaper there compared to flights from ITM(Osaka Int'l), which is much closer to downtown.

This goes to show that high landing fees are not necessarily passed on to passengers. (It costs about $30 more just to get to KIX, and an extra hour, compared to ITM for most passengers).

Regards...
