I don't know about a whole lot of new things on VS, but I know they are adding Montego Bay as well as Dubai. They have also just acquired another A346 named Miss Behavin' (G-VWKD), and will be having an ebay auction to name one of their next planes!

Hi

Just a thought. With all the expansion going on at LGW/MAN don u reckon G-VXLG will get moved to LGW/MAN.

Makes sense to me.

I agree, I think it's inevitable that LGW/MAN will need another 747 for the summer season, and G-VXLG would fit very nicely, as it will leave only V:Port IFE equipped 747's at LHR.

VS are beginning with a 4 weekly LHR-DXB commencing 27 March. VS has already started taking booking since 2005! Load factor for the first week
(based on first four flights) for the LHR-DXB sector is booked at 48%. That's not too bad considering they have another 11 Weeks to go before they operate the Inaugural. So I would expect for that load factor to go up!

DXB is popular resort with Virgin Holidays. When customers used to book packages with Virgin Holidays to DXB. Virgin Holidays used to book their customers on direct flights operated by EK. Now that VS will be flying there. Obviously they will only book there customers on flights operated by VS.

Given that BA's suspension of MEL services has just released rights for daily UK-Australia flights (agreement is for 28pw in total), i'm surprissed VS has jumped on the opportunity to increase SYD flights, or even open up flights to MEL??

The A343's and A346's are based at LHR (with the exception the LGW-PHC service, served by an A343, which is being discontinued).

All of the LHR destinations get the Airbus except SFO, which is the only "year round" 747 only route it seems.

To any VS insiders.

Has there been any talk of a LAX-AKL flight?, or a continuation of the flight to SYD going to AKL?

I heard last year that Branson was keen on flying from LAX to AKL, before heading to SYD, thus creating a RTW service.

I would love to see us fly to NZ, but I'm not sure the US govt would permit a UK airline to fly LAX-AKL (although QF do it!) I may be wrong of course. What is the current agreement between New Zealand and the USA

Again, I think all of us at VS would like to see more services to Oz (particularly those who come from there!!), however, at the moment, we don't have the metal. To start another service to Oz we would need 3 more A346s, and all of those being delivered this year have been earmarked already, some of which to cover the A343s which are leaving the fleet.

And plus with Continental, British Airways, PIA and Delta all to be flying New York-Manchester, i can't really see the demand for a 5th airline on the route.

How about a MAN - IAD flight, there are too many carriers on the MAN - JFK route. Why not take advantage of a popular route from BD previously to IAD. Come on VS.

Where have you heard this from? I seriously doubt that VS would start MAN-JFK especially with Delta starting this route in May, along with BA and PK already on the route and CO on MAN-EWR. As DptMan mentioned, MAN-IAD would work better, or even MAN-LAX. Or dare i say MAN-LAS taking over BD if the do a runner from all long haul at MAN?!!

Even if VS were to start MAN-JFK why would they use the A346 - an A343 would be a much better fit, although as has been pointed out with BA, DL and PK on MAN-JFK and CO on MAN-EWR, New York is very well served from MAN already.

MAN-JFK is one of the routes VS have been thinking about since the 1990s but it in terms of longetivity, MAN-MIA is the route they said they'd be flying and that was announced back in 1986!

The A343 would have been an ideal aircraft for them to send to MAN to tap into the more business-orientated routes but as they've decided that we're a better "leisure" based operation, services to LAX and LAS shouldn't be ruled out - it would then enable them to have 2 744s at MAN for an entire week rather than having to position up an aircraft from LGW to operate 3 services a week.

into MEL VS could do it with a little over 2 aircraft i think.
perhaps opening up BKK, or adding another HKG flight
especially as VS is less reliant on european feed.

LHR 14.00
HKG/BKK 09.00
HKg/BKK 10.30
MEL 22.30

MEL 00.30
HKG/BKK 06.30
HKG/BKK 08.00
LHR ~12.30

well, comething along those lines anyway.

actually, an extention over BOM or DEL would also work well..

well it was definately at LGW in October, november and december!
its due to be reconfigured to LGW config in june time! but it is a gatwick aircraft, maybe problems elsewhere in the fleet explaining the VS11 run!

I beg to disagree!

occassionally LHR equipment is used at LGW during maintenence etc, so XLG may have been used on some flights, however it is still in LHR config, and operates from LHR.

A quick look at the LHR/LGW movements page will confirm this.

http://lhr-lgw.co.uk/

This shows that it was operating LHR services throughout December.

G-VXLG is currently the "odd ball" 747 at LHR, as all the rest are fitted with the AVOD V:Port IFE system, XLG has the older Odyssey IFE.

It is rumoured to be re-configured to LGW spec in the summer like you say.

Rich.

that aircraft was at LGW everyday during the most part of october and November! i know cos i turned it around most days! for all intents and purposes it is a LGW aircraft! its been operating from there, and will be there permanantly pretty soon! so yes its fair to say it will be moving to LGW!!!

Sorry Matt, but you just contradicted yourself in the last post and Richard is correct. The a/c is still in LHR config and is still LHR based and though it was down at LGW during OCT/NOV/DEC it was only to cover whilst the LGW config'd a/c were out on maintanence and to provide extra J capacity on the Barbados route. So yes it may be moving to LGW in the future, but until then it's an LHR based a/c in an LHR config.

I also flew that a/c to CPT in Dec in J from LHR.

Okay,

G-VXLG I s LHR configued and was at LGW from 24 OCT- 19 NOV. This was due to an aircraft going tech which then had to go for matenence.

See this page which shows VXLG's movements for the last 3 months.

With little demand between the two, and it being generally handled by AirNZ, I doubt the US government would raise a fuss with this route being operated by Virgin unless of course it has seemless integration with Virgin America, then a red flag or two might pop up.

The NZ government may have more of an issue with this than anyone.

Personally, I think it is time to give BA a run for its money on the LHR - PHX route, and Branson is just the guy to step up to the plate and knock it out of the park with a 4x weekly service LHR - PHX.

Under Bermuda II I think only one airline is allowed to serve LHR - PHX. Also, if a US airline decides to start PHX-LON, BA will have to shift LHR-PHX to LGW. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It makes the flight go by in the blink of an eye!
(but is that a good thing Wink)
When I had it on VS11 (G-VWOW/Cosmic Girl), I swore that I would explore the whole system and use every single feature in the 7 hour flight. I failed.
Also, the software has improved so it is much more reliable than it was before.

I was lucky enough to get the only two V:Port aircraft back when it was new(G-VBIG and G-VWOW) on LHR-SFO and LAX-LHR, and yeah, the 11hour flights seemed much shorter. The couldn't move around in the map though, as it said you could in the entertainment guide. Has that been fixed?

"You are now free to move about the map"
The software for moving around the map has been installed and it is really neat! It runs Linux and is designed to be easily expandable, so they are constantly developing and installing new things to it. When I had it in July, there where a couple things that had just been added, but the electronic duty free shopping and the internet sections where still grayed out.

G-VWOW is a lovely airplane, ain't it! Wink

Hmmm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall VS operating MAN-JFK before. How could they "come back" to a route that was never cut? Routes cut after 9/11 as I recall were Chicago and Toronto?

Correct. VS have never operated MAN-JFK (and Athens was also cut post 9/11!)

can you clarify CactusTECH?

Thanks!  Smile

I meant VS25/26 just the flight number not MAN-JFK. They said is probably MAN not LHR they have not confirmed to the press if LHR or MAN but the letter i read is MAN!!! it will also be A346 it will come on at 2230 and leave 0800 the next day..... this is all I can tell you now and believe me it is true because we are gearing up the manpower to do work on the overnight aircraft.
Cheers all!!! hows London

I would love to see us fly to NZ, but I'm not sure the US govt would permit a UK airline to fly LAX-AKL (although QF do it!) I may be wrong of course. What is the current agreement between New Zealand and the USA

And we would love to have you! Any rumours or anything? Personally I think VS to AKL would be more likely than BA at the moment.

NZ-USA is open skies, Any NZ, US or Australian based airline can fly the route. Also a couple of others have the rights, I no of AC and SQ.
