JetBlue To Add Up To 8 Cities In 06

Fri Jan 06, 2006 10:48 pm

"United has begun charging passengers $2 for each checked bag at its major hub airports including Washington's Dulles International, Chicago O'Hare and Denver International."

Is that for curb side checkin, or for actual checkin?

All these little nickle and dime charges the legacies are pulling are not going to be good for publicity.
Unless Southwest and the others join them in these charges, I would expect some retaliation as other airlines grow their business.
Older than I just was ,and younger than I will soo be.

Quoting the JetBlue section of the article, "The airline is also considering adding more longer-haul flights, trips of about 2,000 miles, that could connect the East Coast to many Midwestern destinations".

...last I checked, the Midwest was not 2000 miles from the East coast. By road:
OMA-MIA: 1700mi
IND-BOS: 1000mi
STL-EWR: 950mi
MCI-PHL: 1150mi

If they can turn a profit with many of those $25 fares, they can manage my business right now. I don't think they will though.

I believe JBLU could open Albuquerque, San Antonio, El Paso, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Des Moines, Omaha, Wichita. Or you may see them open Las Vegas big time with many non-stops from smaller cities in the midwest. In any case, the schedules will probably be very limited with two to three flts per day. Jetblue is not afraid to open up cities with a limited amount of flts per their past history.

Well, forget about new cities, what about new pairs? Expansion in BOS to the west? How about a BOS-PHX? Or more JFK-PHX besides the redeye. I'm sure the E190s will allow them to grow into markets that the 320 would've been too expensive to operate in. Maybe some west coast expansion, i.e. LGB-PHX/LAS/SEA or the like.

Curbside check-in. Inside, lobby check-in for bags is (of course) still free. AA and a few other airlines if I remember correctly have followed in instituting the $2 charge for each curbside checked bag as well. Only UA has also upgraded the system to where Skycaps can now issue boarding passes, standby cards, etc. - in the past they have not been able to do so, only to issue bag tags.

B6 already serves LAS with 3x-6x to JFK (depending on season), 2x-3x to LGB (depending on season) and 1x to BOS.

I too expect more than 8 new cities this year. I would be willing to bet that there will be some major announcements about new Florida cities very soon.

I'm aware that they already serve them, but it is on a limited schedule. I was referring to the 190 and a spiderweb route system from LAS similar to SWA, but opening cities that WN ignores. LAS is the perfect market to run the 190 on 4 hr redeyes within range to the East, and add cities like Akron, Flint, Dayton, Memphis, Cincinatti, and Milwaukee.

Sarasota and Jax may see service this year, but I think they are rethinking going into MIA due to cost. PBI seems to be on a steep growth track, so I see them catching most of the growth to S. Florida until or when Ft. Lauderdale is ever capable of handling more growth.

And go up against Alleigent? I think that will be a good match JB vs. G6. But some of those smaller routes can't support 2 carriers in the case of G6/HP/HPX, G6/NW or G6/JB.

Ding ding ding. I would call this one a winner.

With the collapse of DH, I would expect DTW and Charlotte. I'm also thinking the RJ hubs are pretty vulnerable right now. I would also expect much more service out of IAD. I hope for MSP and JAX, but that is only a hope at this point.

All I can say is ORD...

PLEASE.

(I know, this isn't under B6's control)

I'd love to see the E190's brought in to OAK on OAK->Portland/SEA/LAS routes..). I understand B6's desire to not go head-to-head against WN, but it would be nice if they would reward us loyal B6 fans with at least the OPTION to fly on them, even if its just once daily.

OAK to Seattle, Portland and Chicago, and I could (and would happily) do 100% of my travelling on them.

How much cheaper per flight is an E-190 to a A320?

The only way B6 goes into ORD is if it can get 4 or 5 gates to lease. Even with Indy Air giving up its gate and possible consolidation between US and HP, that would not create enough gate space.

I'm thinking this year, we will see the B6 E-190's fly out to the west coast from a midwest city like AUS-LGB or AUS-OAK.

I would love to see OAK-SEA and OAK-PDX, but I think there's too much low-cost competition on those routes. What about OAK-DEN or OAK-SLC?

Also, I think we'll see OAK-EWR.

LOL sooooo true! Very similar to Duluth, MN but even we got Allegiant service to LAS (why? I don't know . . .) but I wouldn't expect to see JetBlue in MSP anytime soon. NW has a death grip on the airport and the last thing they want is to lose it to F9. MSP deserves a spot right up with CLT for most overpriced market.

My guess would be STL and CLT though for new F9 service.

Though I would like to see OAK expansion, that would put them in competition with WN on many routes. But on the other hand, I feel B6 can take them on now.

So:
-OAK-PDX, OAK-SEA, OAK-BUR, OAK-LAS, OAK-EWR
-LAS-SEA, LAS-PDX, LAS-SAN
-BUR-AUS, BUR-EWR, BUR-IAD, BUR-FLL, BUR-SEA, BUR-PDX, BUR-MCO, BUR-DEN

If you're gonna go against WN you might as well go head on in a group of markets. Plus, in LAS they can support more flights at their gate. At BUR they have 2 Gates for 4 flights a day to JFK, so if you figure about 9 flights a day which B6 can do, they can get about 18 flights per day, so basically 14 more flights added on to their schedule.
*BUT I think some of those flights can be on the 190 and they don't want the 190 on the west coast now, so my predictions are over the next 2 years. I am sure a good amount of those can be done with the 320 though. Don't forget they still have lots of 320's coming online.

MAH4546:

You're probably right but never say never. We've seen airlines pick some whacky routes, including B6. I never would have thought there would be a market for OAK-FLL. Apparently OAK-LGB is working pretty well. AS tried it twice and failed both times.

AQ flies between OAK-OGG and OAK-KOA. That's never happened.

What about OAK-ORY, OAK-PPT and OAK-BRU? Those went away because either the airline kicked the bucket (Citybird) or 9/11 (Corsair).

Dont forget there is now a vacant gate and ticket counter space at MHT. Before DH dropped MHT, there was no space for new entrants. Neeleman has said out loud that he wants to start service to MHT, and this vacant gate and counter spot gives them the opening they need.

I'd be willing to bet that talks intensified between the two parties as soon as DH announced they were ending service there.

Actually NAS has been served since 2004. So it would really be AUS, RIC, and then an additional 8 cities. In total, that would be 10 cities.

That sounds about right. I honestly think that we'll see Daytona Beach, Sarasota and Melbourne coming online this year. Also Freeport, BS and I would also suspect Bermuda. Midwest I could perhaps see STL or MCI (one or the other, but not both).

BTW, if RIC is successful, I'd expect ORF to be added quickly. If AUS is successful, I'd expect SAT to be added quickly too. However, it looks as if AUS will be off to a bit of a slow start (which is not at all surprising because 1.) it's the slowest month of the year, 2.) this will be B6's only destination in TX and therefore no one really knows about them).

I would like to second the nomination for San Antonio (there are two empty gates right next to Southwest!)

I'll tell you one thing, it's going to be alot more than 8 cities...

Wow I'm surprised so many people think it could be as high as, or higher than, eight new cities this year. Opening a new station is a huge expense and with the increased fuel costs I think that may be hard to do.

I think the most Southwest has ever done in one year is three (not counting the Morris purchase). After opening three new cities in 2005 Gary Kelly has already said that there may not be another new city added in 2006.

For the same arguments that F9 could start operations in COS, discussed in a previous thread, B6 could find a market in COS. If ABQ, ELP, OMA, and OKC seem reasonable, so does COS. 162 passengers a day from COS to the NYC area -- plus a lot more if properly stimulated, according to www.faremeasure.com (where do those statistics come from? probably legit, but that web site doesn't cite a source).

I watched the Pocket Session that took place on December 20th in SLC. David said they are in the process of picking about 10 new cities from a list of about 25 for service in 2006. Expect B6 to start filling in the map!!! Look for announcements on new service in mid-January. I would guess after the launch of Austin (January 19th). Expect Boston to be a big part of our growth in 2006.

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.
