Connecting In ICN In One Hour, Can It Be Done?

Fri Jan 06, 2006 11:13 pm

Folks, let me try this question out for size.

I'm on an international flight into ICN from JFK on KE. If all fllights are on schedule, then I have a one hour layover in ICN before my flight to KUL. Question is, is 1 hour enough time to make my next flight? Land at 5 pm and depart at 6 pm. I imagine I have to clear customs in ICN so my gut tells me no. Any info is helpful. thanks

Customs? No. definitely not. ICN is one of the most conveniant airports in the world, it is just a pity that you don't have more time.

No you will not have to clear customs in ICN. You will need to go to the transfer area show your ongoing ticket and go through security again to get back into the departure area. You should have enough time. Chances are the airline will be waiting for you when you get off the plane to get you to the gate for that short of a layover.

I think I am misunderstood then. I Don't have to clear customs when connecting in ICN? So, when I arrive into ICN its simply a matter of going to the transfer area? I did this last year and forget what exactly I did. All flights are on KE so it would be nice if they held the flight if I'm not to delayed.

If you are transiting ICN you do not clear customs. If all on KE, 1 hour should be fine.

You would only clear customs if you enter Korea. ICN is not too hard to transfer at. All you do is reclear security, and if you already have a boarding pass you can go directly to the gate. If you do not have a boarding pass for the KUL flight you will need to check in at the transfer desk, after security. Sometimes the transfer desk is open before security. But, I have seen that hit or miss.

I go to JKT 3 times a year via ICN and I have to stay overnight due to the flight from ATL arrives after the JKT. So, I end up clearing customs so I can get away form the airport.

Thanks for the info. KE has two daily flights from JFK to ICN with the first one leaving at 12:50 am so I could always take that one, clear customs head into town for lunch or something and make the 6:00 pm to KUL with plenty of time to spare. Thanks again for clearing the procedure up./

If you are on KE through to KUL, they should check your bags through and also issue the second boarding pass, so you should not have aprob. It is a GREAT airport!

Jumbo Jet - Unless you are planning to stay overnight in Seoul, leaving the airport to take a quick lunch in Seoul may not really be an attractive option. The one major drawback to ICN is that it is far from downtown Seoul with no rail link: you will either have to take a bus or a taxi, both of which will take about an hour (at least) to get into the city center - much more if you arrive during a particularly heavy traffic period.

That being said, I suggest taking an extra day (or three) to enjoy Seoul in a more relaxed setting!

Of course no customs crap, I have only met such nonsense in the U.S. or Canada.

I would not go to Seoul during the layover or schedule extra days - not worth it. I lived these before and hated the loaction of ICN.

KUL is, well, cool.  Smile

I can't speak to a lot of the customs clearing time, because I've always been to KUL in J or F, and thus got o go to the premium immigration lanes. Things do seem rather effcient, though.

From the airport the best thing to do (assuming you are heading into KL itself) is to take the KLIA Ekspres train into town. They run every 15 minutes during the day, and aren't very expensive -- I think maybe 35 MYR (10USD)? The train ride is about 30 minutes. That will leave you at KL Sentral station, and you can catch a cab if you'd like. There's a taxi desk you go to, tell them your destination, and you pay them. They give you a receipt-type ticket that you give outside to the cab driver.

As others have mentioned, ICN, like most airports outside the US, is built with a sterile transit area, so you don't actually have to enter Korea (and with an hour, certainly you wouldn't want to).

Can one expect the working people of Malaysia to be english speaking? I would imagine so.
