Midwest MD80 At BKL 1/7?

Sun Jan 08, 2006 8:44 am

I decided this afternoon (about 3:00) that I was going to make a run down to the other end of North Marginal and see if anything was happening at BKL... And as I approached "Hmm, that livery looks like Midwest...nah, probably a bizjet" but as I pulled up along side it was indeed a Midwest MD81 (according to FlightAware). Looks like it came in as MEP 8029 at 12:38 AM from MKE...

I don't see a departure scheduled for it on FlightAware.

As much as I would like to think that scheduled airline service was starting at an airport within walking distance of my appartment (especially with what I've heard about Midwest... I assume it's a charter for someone? Anyone have any more info about this?

Naah... Too easy. (I guess I really should pay more attention to the sports world before posting questions like this... does anyone else ever charter a full-size airliner into an airport like BKL?)

Next question... Assuming it brought people in rather than ferrying empty, why schedule it to arrive slightly after midnight? I would assume that the players would prefer a decent night's sleep.

Next question is why leave it sitting there all day... I would assume that Midwest could be making money with it during the time between bringing the players in and bringing the players out... Or is it considered a "Spare" that they don't need for revenue service?

The charters will sit where they are if they are not needed on another charter. They are considered spares and we do not fly them in scheduled service unless necessary.

They usually do leave late after a Bucks game to get them to where they need to go instead of waiting until the next day. That decision is totally up to the Bucks. It's their charter.

Most of the sports charters for MLB and the NBA land at BKL. The NBA charters usually arrive at night in advance of a game the next day and the MLB charters usually depart after drop-off since the team are usually in town for 2-3 nights.

Often they arrive late a night depending on the location and end time of the previous game. Lately we have also seen an AA 757 at BKL carrying the Dolphins from MIA, though most of the NFL teams usually use CLE (including the Browns who use a Delta 764).

My favorite BKL charter story was shortly after the Cleveland Grand Prix. The Yankees 727 charter was the first to arrive after the airport opened and was promptly greeted by the race staff mooning the plane during taxi. Damn Yankees!

Maybe because the Bucks played at home and they flew out after the game...??!!

Because they'll fly the team back out after the game. The charter is for the flight in and out, so its actaully cheeper just to leave the plane in the chater city.

I guess I'm kind of lost as to why this question gets asked all the time in citys where there is a pro sports team... "Why is airline 'X' here.?".. "Why did Delta fly in a 757..we only see RJ's..?" Well, daaaa..!! I live in a town that has two pro sports teams. Every Friday or Saturday during the NFL we see a 'odd' visitor come or go... it's a GIVEN..!! The day before a hockey game we see a new visitor come in or leave.....it's a GIVEN..!!

I will refrain from comment to protect the innocent....but not all that long ago.

Thanks for the info, Sideflare. I appreciate it (for anyone who cares, it looks like it went back to MKE at about 11:30 last night as MEP 8030.

Partially because I tend to forget that Cleveland has pro sports teams... sure I live 2 miles down the street from Browns Stadium or about 5 minutes from Gund Arena (or whatever the heck they're calling it now), but since I don't follow sports, the only time I really notice is when a Browns game ends and screws up traffic in front of my building. I'm not really what you would call a sports fan. [And I have only lived here for 6 months, after all...]
