Mega ARK 747 400 And A Normal 747 400

Sun Jan 08, 2006 8:46 am

What is the difference between a mega ark 747 and normal 747? I traveled with SQ last year on mega ark 747 to LHR and I have also traveled on BA and Air NZ 747's in the past but I don't know the difference. They both look the same to me.

Any replys would be much appreciated.

Mega Ark is SQs B744Fs and B744s

Yes, but just like the B744s those names are being removed

I heard that on Airliners.net that the titles MEGA ARK and JUBILEE were being removed on 747's and 777's but I just didn't know what the words MEGA ARK meant.

Thanks

Didn't the SQ naming start with the 747-300's Big Top?

And besides, the passenger 747-400's were called Megatops. The 744F's were called MegaArks.

MEGA ARK

I've done a google search and this is what I think it could be but it says in the bible that an Ark was used to carry thousands of animals while the world was being flooded. On the Ark was always a male and a female of each animal type and once the flooding went the animals were allowed off the cargo boat. Maybe thats where SQ got the idea for there B744Fs

That's because SQ transports 2 of everything on them  Silly

Anyway, SQ used to (although some planes still have it) name their fleet type.

777 (200, 200ER and 300) - Jubilee
744 - Megatop
744F - MegaArk

Previous fleet type
743 - BigTop
340 - Celestar

I think I got them right.

As far as I recall, the naming tradition at SQ began with the B743 or Big Top. Megatop was a winning name in a competition and I think it really suits the plane. I feel that SQ's branding of its services and fleet types has been rather successful, I remember being at the viewing gallery in Changi many years ago when a gentleman, referred to a B744 from a European carrier (can't remember which one) as a Megatop. In Australia, I have also heard someone referring to the PTVs on Lauda Air as "Krisworld" so they definitely had some effect with consumers.

Jubilee was coined in honor of the airline's 50th (jubilee) anniversary, not to sure about Celestar, while the A345s were known as LEADERships - a pun on Leader (longest non-stop flights in the world) ship (aircraft) and the idea of leadership.

Sadly, the current management no longer deems it fashionable to have these names on the planes and have activity removed them. A friend who used to work for inflight services noted that they actually spent money removing the name leadership from promotion material and souvenirs sold on board of the A345.

On a lighter note I remember when we were in secondary school, where women who were well endowed had a part of their anatomy termed "Megatops" .  Wink

I still wonder if the person at SQs PR department was someone gay (who have other associations with a "top" let alone a big top or a megatop) but let's presume the naming process was innocent, in that case I guess the 747s were called "(whatever)tops" because they had an upperdeck (top).
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

When the 747-400's came on line with QF, they had an in-company competition to name the new jets, especially since SQ started it all with their 747-300's called BIGTOP, and was heavily advertising the near arrival of their new MEGATOPS!!!!

So, after a long, far reaching contest, one lucky winner got the honor of having their suggestion painted on every new QANTAS 747-400...
LONGREACH.

Play on words for those who don't know. 1. Referring to the new high range of the 747-400, and 2. QANTAS founders P J McGuiness and W Hudson Fysh started it all in Longreach, Queensland, Australia, Nov 16, 1920.
(actually, the partners got together in Winton, Queensland, but first flight out of Longreach.)
