Congolese Court Seizes AF, SN And ET Equipment

Sun Jan 08, 2006 3:27 pm

A Congolese Court ordered the seizure of airline equipment of AF. SN and ET after they allegedly failed to pay for ground services. The seizure was requested by Congolese Airlines (LAC) and covered items such as boarding stairs, trucks and luggage belts at Kinshasha Airport.

The three airlines targeted began a counter-suit on Saturday, disputing LAC's claim to have a monopoly on services at the airport.

Very sad situation.

Africa has suffered tremendously from corruption and mismanagement. For a country to risk losing international carriers and possibly scaring off other potential airlines is a mistake I hope Congolese leaders will not make.

What airlines fly into Kinshasa?

Was KQ paying their fees and no one else? Strange.

Congolese Airlines (CAL) claimed that AF, ET and SN had not paid Congolese Airlines for its ground services since 2002. Personally I take this with a pinch of salt...

Its equally bad if those carriers dont pay what they have to pay.

But it must be a tight situation especially for SN, as one third of the A330 fleet is grounded, right??

According to the news article linked, also qouted by SA7700 in the starter thread, aircraft are not effected. This is an excerpt pasted from the news article:

The source said the seizure, ordered late on Friday at the request of Congolese Airlines (LAC), covered such items as boarding stairs, trucks and luggage belts at Kinshasa airport.

No mention of aircraft being seized, which certainly would have been included in the list if such were the case.

You have, in all liklihood, hit the proverbial nail on the head. Sounds a lot like the modus operandi of a U.S. legacy airline operating under the cover of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, except that the de facto extortion takes on different forms.
