Flying On Friday 13th?

Sun Jan 08, 2006 5:15 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm flying SYD to AKL next Friday (with EK 418 777-300) - the 13th! A few of my silly mates have suggested that I ask the Airliners.net bretheren, if there has ever been an 'accident/incident' on a "Friday 13th".

I'm not in the least supersticious - but am wondering all the same. Be interested in any info.

Cheers

Hey Andz - i was talking about dates - not rows  Smile

Just interested to know if any of the history buffs out there can attach anything to a "Friday 13th" - lets call it trivia?

Just swing a black cat around by the tail 3 times before the flight, and you'll be fine... just make sure that it's not mine, cuz' she's got some claws that will do some damage, and you'd be surprised with a cat's ablility to overcome centrifugal (or centripetal for some of you nerds out there) force with those back muscles.

You could also do a Huck Finn and stick your thumb in some stump water beforehand.

In all honesty, though, I don't think that you have anything to worry about, statistically speaking.
We can agree to disagree.

I flew CO TLV-EWR on Friday the 13th.

Plane was half empty, I had a row all to myself, and this was by far my best TLV-NYC flight ever...

Complete list of airline accidents that have occurred on Friday 13th:

13 May 1959 / Transportes Aereos Peruanas /Curtiss C-46/Toumavista, Peru 12:12
13 November 1966/All Nippon Airways/NAMC YS-11/Matsuyama, Japan 50:50
13 October 1972 /Aeroflot/Ilyushin IL-14/Krasnaya Polyana, USSR 174:174
13 October 1972 /TAMU/Fairchild FH-227D /San Fernando, Chile 29:45
13 July 1973/Delta Air Lines/McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31/Boston, Massachusetts, USA 89:89
13 August 2004/Air Tahoma (DHL)/Convair CV-580/Hebron, Kentucky, USA/1:2

Only 6 in total, certainly statistically no more than any other day!

Even if you're talking of days of the month (i.e. the 13th whether a Friday or not) it's statistically one of the safest months:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v63/noelmg/Book1_13547_image001.gif

Statistically, the 8th is the worst day of the month, with the 20th, 7th and 13th being the safest!

Cheers,
Noel

Funny you should say that, I flew LGW-EWR-SEA-ANC on last 13th May and the LGW-EWR flight was almost empty. I also had a row of 9 seats to myself (not that I need that many), the crew used their extra down time to chat to pax, the weather was great meaning I got an excellent view on manhattan on approach - I'd say it was the perfect flight. People must have been conciously avoiding flying that day because LGW-EWR on a friday is usually petty busy.

I flew PMI-DUS on Friday the 13th with a LTU A330
The flight was almost empty although the outward flight from DUS was completely full (it also was high densitiy season in summer).
Anyway you could sit wherever you want and it was a great flight.
The F/A didn't want to admit that the plane was empty because of Friday the 13th but i bet it was because people booked their returns for another flight.

Last May we had a Friday 13th and I was flying home from the Greek Island of Skiathos. The aircraft was delayed 6 hours then cancelled. The airline, Excel, re-routed an aircraft bound for Mykonos which was half empty (coincidence?) and it made a stop to pick us up in Skiathos. We then continued on to Mykonos, dropped some people off and then headed back to MAN.

Useless!

I think very few airlines (any?) have a Row #13 and many hotels have no thirteenth floor.

BUT

I was born on Friday the 13th. As it happens, this very Friday coming when I'll be - gulp - 50.  wideeyed

So I won't hear a bad word against it!

I would be more worried about the weather on the day of my flight, especially thunderstorms in the summer and snow/ice in the winter. They are more realistic risk factors than any supersisious phobias of a given day. Weather, along with misjudgments by pilots and ATC, is something as we all well saw last year in Toronto and Peru and in many other situations that contributed to major crashes.
Yes, we may notice more crazyness on "Friday the 13th", or nights where a visible full moon, but that is probably due to hightened awareness from the prevelance of superstisions. I am quite sure in some areas of Asia for example, there are days with numbers that themselves or with other number factors that are considered unlucky and would discourage one from flying our of superstition.
I would suggest that since 9/11 there are phobias as to people flying to/from or around the USA on and about September 11th.

My father and I are either flying RIC-ATL-SFO, or RIC-ATL-OAK on Friday the 13th. My oldest brother is flying LAX-OAK, and my other brother is flying CMH-CVG-SFO or CMH-SLC-OAK. I'm the least superstitious person, I don't care.

I did LAX-IAH-AUS yesterday (13Jan06), only problem was the IAH-AUS was delayed due to late arrival of equipment LGA-IAH. It's all LGA's fault.  Wink

I've flown friday the 13th a couple of times and never gave it much thought. It was kind of strange to fly a year to the day, Sept 11th '02. ATL-BOS-YUL. But the aprehension far exceeded the journey.
