Will Southwest Ever Be Bought?

Sun May 28, 2000 5:41 am

I am sure that there is an easy explanation to this. With all of the rumors and talks about possible mergers, no one mentions Southwest at all. Why is that? Personally, I would like to see SW stand alone, for it nicely fills a niche. But every other airline come sup when talking about possible mergers, take-overs, etc...

I don't think that has even a grain of possibility. Southwest is way too popular and successful. They have such a powerful image that the public outcry alone will almost guarantee that anyone that thought about buying them out would reconsider.

No airline can buy Southwest because the company is worth to much. It would have one of the highest aquisation costs.

Actually, I think that you guys overlooked the most important reason Southwest won't be bought ---

It's structured so differently from a traditional airline that any takeover/merger would destroy it's very reason for being - it would never work, and the majors know that.

If anything SW would be the Buyer!! thoguh there arent too many all 737 fleet airlines and if they ever bought one different it would have to have a basic fleet.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

How about SWA buying Alaska and dumping the Alaska MD-80's and keeping the 737's?

Eastwind would have been more logical.

Hi,

777X got it to the point, the issue with SW is rather it's unique structure especially the fact that it doesn't operate a hub! out of all US majors (and world majors) there is no one other than SW flying point to point.

Long live SW anf Herp Kelleher!
