Hangars At JFK

Tue Jan 10, 2006 1:57 am

In looking at aerial photos of JFK, I can see that the Van Wyck Expressway (the highway leading into the terminal area) is lined with very large hangar complexes. Who were all these hangars built for? I know that today American uses one of the hangars for line maintenance, and that JetBlue just built a new hangar near Terminal 8, but what about all the large hangars along the Van Wyck? Were they for Eastern, Pan Am, TWA, etc.? How about the hangars on the north side of the airport, along runway 13L-31R?

I'm hoping some of the JFK junkies on this site can help me out.

remembering from the days when I took that road almost daily, the hangars on the right hand side belonged to PA, TW and EA, and on the left hand of the Van Wyck (entering the central area) was AA and UA. Seaboard and NWA had their maintenance hangars along 13R/31L near Rockaway Blvd.

I never realized Northwest (or I guess back then it was Northwest Orient) had a hangar at JFK. Did National have a JFK hangar as well?

Did any of the local/regional airlines like Allegheny, Mohawk or Northeast keep hangars at JFK, or did they have them at LaGuardia and Newark?

I think UA uses Hangar 19, which is all the way down at the end of 13R. AA and KE are on the left as you go into the airport on the Van Wyck, along with a few others. The former Tower Air terminal is on the right.

I had a map that detailed which hangars were which, and what numbers they were used for, but can't seem to find it anymore.

Shouldn't that be end of 31L or start of 13R  Smile And yes, UA is using H/19.

I meant to type what I did, but I could have made it clearer. I tend to think of the start of the runway as the "end" (the other end being the "departure end"), unless I'm actually on the runway. It's just a quirk of mine.

When entering the airport Pan Am had 3 Hangars on the right, The 1st hangar which is located just near the end of runway13R was built for there 747's in 1972. The second hangar was Tower Air when Pan Am went out of business, Tower air also made it a terminal. The third hangar was abandoned in 1980 and Japan Airlines converted it for there Cargo operation. The fourth hangar was TWA. On the right side is American Airlines and the second was Eastern's which was torn down and replaced by Korean Air Cargo. The Third hangar was United which also was torn down and replaced by Lufthansa Cargo.

When you come in from the JFK Expressway from the Belt Parkway you can see the B6 hangar, the AA hangar which is a little over in the distance. Polar Air Cargo, Alitalia Cargo and a couple other ones. There also is the all the hangars on the left which has FedEx and DHL in the back and the three hangars along the runway across from T7. I don't come in on the Van Wyck so I don't know about those.

Hangar 12 was used by TWA. When you come in thorugh the Van wyck you'll see AA hangars, if you go all the way around the JFK expressway you will now see Jetblue hangar, Half of Hangar 19 is used by UA now the other half is used mostly by Evergreen but actually the Port Authority has controlled over it so anyone may use it. Hangar 17 is Tower Air hangar you can see Hangar 19 and 17 by lefferts BLvd. Hangars 3 & 4 are now condemed and will come down soon these 2 are in front terminal 7 or RW 13L/31R Jetblue does some overnight work still on Hangar 3 and this used to be old PanAM and UA hangar! hope this helps!!!

Can anyone point out on a picture where the former Tower Air hangar/terminal was?

Also, does anyone have interior photos or a description of the Tower terminal? Didn't Morris (Nachtomi) also have corporate offices in the terminal?

Would it make sense for an airline (not dependent on interline connections) to set up shop in their "own" terminal, or does the PANYNJ want to consolidate all airlines in Terminals 1-9?

Thanks,

Thanks much, Mir!

Do you know if anyone is using the area now and if it was also fitted with customs and immigration?

Thanks,

Pan Am had hangars 14, 17 and 19 at JFK. Hangar 14 was the first and contained Pan Am's operational headquatres including its SOC as well as a flight kitchen. Hangar 17 was transferred into a working terminal during construction of what is now the Worldport. All of Pan Am's SJU flights operated in/out of this hangar but there was no customs or immigration. Hangar 19 was built to accomodate the 747's and at one point was the largest building at JFK.

To correct Mir the Tower Terminal is just on the other side of the hangar. You can see the two jetways. I've flown out of there twice.

I never realized that PA used a hangar as a temporary terminal. It would make sense - the construction of the Worldport must have been a pretty complicated undertaking.

So driving down the Van Wyck you had Pan Am, Pan Am, Pan Am and TWA on the right, and American, Eastern and United on the right? Got it.

Was Eastern's maintenance base at JFK as large as the MIA facility?

I believe the Tower Air terminal (hangar) has been vacant since they closed down in 2000. It certainly hasn't been used as a terminal although it may have seen some use as a hangar - not sure.

I'm also positive that it had customs and immigration there. I departed from that terminal once but had the good fortune to be booked to return to JFK on a different airline (it was planned that way).
None shall pass!!!!

Here's the former Tower Air Terminal/Hangar, there are two or three Evergreen 747s parked on the ramp.

The last few times I was at JFK, there was always some private IL-62 parked there, any ideas as to who's it is?
