Finnair's OH-LGG Getting Ready For Service

Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:10 pm

Finnair's 7th MD-11 OH-LGG (cn 48753/608, ex PP-VQI) is two days from it's first inspection flight in Finnair colors, scheduled for 12th January. I've just seen the plane, looks factory-fresh on the outside but the cabin is still a mess. Finnair Technical Services is working round the clock on the plane to get it ready for it's first commercial service as AY097 HEL-BKK-SIN on Saturday 14th. They say that the refurbishing of LGG has been their biggest single task to date. The plane was in very bad condition, rumors are flying about 200 bird nests found in the insulation and air conditioning ducts, though the person in charge of the plane at Finnair would not confirm this. The delayed overhaul has forced Finnair to fly one of their A321s (OH-LZC) to Lisbon for maintenance, to be done by TAP I presume, due to lack of hangar space at HEL.

LGG will have the same basic cabin configuration as the two ex-Citybird airframes, OH-LGE and LGF. Rows 21-30 will have Varig seat upholstery for some time and the new crew-rest area features four lie-flat beds in front of the rear lavatories, causing a slight reduction in the number of passenger seats. The crew-rest is still not certified so they may have to install the old arrangement back for some time. The new business-class seats are of course superb, leg-space on row 1 and on seats 2DEH is ridicilously big. The only new thing for economy-passengers are the flat IFE monitors in the ceiling and on bulk-heads.

Happy landings GolfGolf!

Thanks for the info. I'll fly to HEL tonight, and will also have business at the airport there. Maybe I'll be lucky and catch a glimpse.

Cheers

She's in LEKO2, behind the old Finnair hangar with arches next to runway 04R/22L. Not visible to the runway, unfortunately, and not in shape to be towed out Sad

It's good to see that there is still an airline out there that still has MD-11's in regularly scheduled service...although, I don't know for how much longer. I believe JAL and Varig still have Passenger MD-11's in scheduled service, but they're going fast.

How about coming out the SEA again?

Unfortunately not, in Finnair's case at least. There is no money to be made on Trans-Atlantic traffic with the current competition.

Well, it was worth the try. Does Finnair plan on any service to the US west coast? I know they tried SFO for a little while with MD-11's. I guess SAS has cornered the Scandinavian market out of SEA.

Ok...well that eliminates JL. Does WO fly any regularly scheduled routes like the IAH-Africa in conjunction with Sonair?

I was reading in the board magazine a statement from Finnairs CEO, that they want to have more MD-11s if possible but they can simply not find any available aircrafts. This is the reason why they ordered airbus ! Well done Boeing !

There was a report in this week's Flight to the effect that AY is reconsidering getting an eighth MD11 and instead wants to bring forward the delivery of its first A340, if it can get one.

Any comments?

How come? Where has this aircraft been before AY bought it?

Look at the start of the thread, it's an ex-RG aircraft:

You may well be right. That's why I said "at least".
Anyway, it's still a couple of years from now, so plans can change.

This would most probably be a second-hand airframe on top of the order for 3 A343s, as no suitable MD-11s are available.

As said before, the best aircraft to replace an MD-11 is another MD-11. For Finnair it is a question of cargo capacity, of which MD-11 has plenty and Finnair makes good money out of this. According to an article in the Finnish aviation magazine Ilmailu the cargo capacity of an '11 is 20t, that of A359 is 17t and A343 can manage only 14t. So most probably the A343s will be employed on routes which suffer the least of the reduced tonnage available for cargo, namely HEL-JFK (as it is the shortest of AY's long-hauls) and HEL-Japan (I presume?). BKK-HEL sectors are weight-restricted during the hot summer months and China-HEL is also cargo-heavy.

Quoting Wedgetail737 (Reply 5):

Nope. Finnair's current life-line is Far-East Asia, as geographically Helsinki is an ideal transfer-point between Europe and the Far-East. In the future maybe, if more traffic rights can be obtained from Russia, as there is a huge potential in Russia-USA traffic. Even currently Finnair's HEL-JFK is mostly full of Russians during the heavy summer months.

Maybe it stood in storage in Brazil also? If it wasn't sealed properly anything can get in, and planes make a perfect nesting place for birds.

There's a photo of it at AMS on Aug 13, 2005 on this site. Adding those three months stored in VCV, we get mid-November. The picture of the arrival at HEL was dated Nov 12, 2005.
I have a strong feeling why the maintenance person could not confirm any birds' nests in OH-LGG, namely that there were none except in the rumours.

Plenty of available aircraft - however none deemed to meet AY standards!

I have heard that AYs experience with OY-LGG is forcing them into taking the A340's earlier than planned - the cost overruns are significant. This will be the last MD11 coming their way.

I for one will miss the MD11 - my favourite Long Haul aircraft - quiet, smooth, proper winglets.... The MD11 was the only confortable long haul aircraft in th delta fleet when sitting in economy.
