Awesome 757 Video!

Wed Jan 11, 2006 3:48 am

It looks like it was at an airshow! It looks to me like that one NZAF 752!

As I said in a previous thread, when the US Navy was flying the 757 to evaluate it as a potential patrol aircraft, their opinion was that it would be a creditable dogfighter.

Almost but not quite. I am fortunate enough to live just a few kilometers away from the RNZAF base at Whenuapai in Auckland where the 757s are based so I get to see them 'practice' this quite often. Very cool though I am not sure I would want to be on the aircraft when it is performing these maneuvers...  Wow!

Wow - never mind the loop - did the 757 go almost vertical at the end of the clip ?????? or is it just my mid-day JD diet working its way through me ???

There is most likely no way to know this, but how fast were they going when they passed the camera? My best guess puts it faster than 150kts, but slower than 200kts. Too bad the clip ends just when it gets good!

I don't have my glasses with me (don't ask), but watching that great video a few times, I don't think he had any flaps deployed, was flying with a clean wing, so he was probably doing, if not more than, at least 200 kts.

After some TCAS sim training, which involved some wild maneuvers, we had an hour left in the time, and got to play around. It is amazing what this airplane can do!!
If not now, then when?

On a sidenote: The aircraft on the video is an ex-Transavia Airlines 757 right? In fact, all of NZAF 757s are formerly operated by Transavia Airlines of the Netherlands right? I had a tour inside one of these 757s when Transavia still operated them, the 757 really stands high, great aircraft!

Back in the '80s, just after the 757 had come out, there was an airshow at BFI in Seattle. The 757 wasn't supposed to be on display, but someone thought it'd make a good show. The Eastern 757 (the one with the 757 logo on the tail) did a short takeoff roll before going near vertical as in the video. It was one of the best things I'd ever seen.

Thanks for the video! Brings back good memories.

I'd probably bump that up. As he passes the cameramens position, I'd put its speed at closer to 300kts or better. Remember its an air show, speed limitations need not apply. As well, I don't think anything could climb that well if it only started off doing 150-200kts! Hell, You can do 150kts in a single engine Cessna and that 57' was going way faster than a Cessna!

The amazing thing about this airplane is that in addition to having incredible performance, it is one of the most economical aircraft in the world. Ferrari performance with Honda fuel economy.

Found this over on FL350! Same general idea.

These things are AMAZING!

Also, How much of diffrence is there in performace between the RR and the other engines(eg. PW)?

What are these planes used for? Sea Patrolling? Troop transport?

PW2037/2040 36,600 lb - 40,100 lb
RB211 40,200 lb - 43,500 lb

IIRC, the PW has the better fuel burn overall, but the RR has much lower maintenance costs. And it won 80% of the market.

With good reason, it's primarily a short haul aircraft. A higher percentage of the flight is takeoff, hence more emphasis is put on fuel efficiency when climbing. A mirror of the A343.

Also, it's the largest of the most densely configured aircraft in the sky (those configured 3-3).

That FlightLevel 350 video displays the 757's heavy wake turbulence very well. On final the streamer vortexes are being thrown around so badly they completely dissipate in seconds.

The MD-11 leaves long and barely perturbed streamers....because it's wing is more efficient IMO, it doesn't chop up the air behind it as badly. It has a large wake, but small turbulence.

The above is opinion and although I know no one agrees I am stating it anyway for the record. Relatively soon the topic will arise again .... after the A380 test is complete.  tongue
