Longest Scheduled Commercial Flight

Hello all,

Is the flight SQ19 (Singapore Airlines) LAX - SIN definitely the longest regularly scheduled commercial flight? 18:20 of travel time. SQ operates this flight with the A340-500.

Am I missing anything?

The reverse flight SQ20, SIN - LAX is 'only' 15:25 long.

You are missing the EWR - SIN flight SQ21 which is scheduled for 18:35.

The reverse SQ22 is scheduled for 17:10

Newark-Singapore and Singapore-Newark aren't nearly as bad as they seem. Economy passengers are treated to extra seat width and legroom, and all seats have the state of the art Kirsworld entertainment system. When I flew EWR-SIN and SIN-EWR, I actually found the flight to be relaxing. Rarely in my busy lifestyle do I get a chance to sleep as long as I can and then wake up and lounge around while watching movies and being fed. I really enjoyed it and ended up relaxed and feeling quite good (minus the jetlag and dehydration that comes with long flights). The worst part of the flight is that it completely reverses time zones which means that you leave at 11pm in EWR, but that is 11am in SIN.

Here are the reports detailing the service. You get 2.5 meals. On EWR-SIN (dep: 11pm, arr: 5am), there is a full dinner and full breakfast service along with a snack in the middle of the flight that can be eaten at a passengers discretion. On SIN-EWR (dep: 11am, arr: 5pm), there is a full lunch and then dinner service and a light breakfast.

The 18 hours aren't that much longer than other flights. They don't fly by, but it doesn't feel like it lasts forever either since you probably will get a decent amount of sleep. However I do feel sorry for the crew. On the other hand, if you fly the route in Raffles Class, it is quite pleasant.

there's also AC YYZ-HKG nonstop. 16.25hrs west and 14.5hrs eastward. my sister was on that flight not too long ago. UA has ORD-HKG and CO EWR-HKG

Actually it is scheduled for 18:10. Dep 12:05pm, arr: 5:15pm. This time of year, SIN is 13 hours ahead of EWR, so you have to add 13 hours to the arrival time to get a total time en route of 18hrs and 10min. The SIN-EWR flight benefits from strong tailwinds over the Pacific and North America while the EWR-SIN flight must go the long way over Asia, or take a polar route.

I don't completely agree. How often do you have no responsibilities to do anything and will have someone else give you anything that you need or want to the best of their abilities. Singapore Airlines has great service, and if you are in Raffles Class, you will be comfortable. It is rare among Americans that a person has time to sit and do nothing to relax. I actually enjoyed the flight. I personally enjoyed the EWR-SIN segment. It was great to sit down and have a long drawn out high quality meal and then lie down and enjoy sleeping for as long as you possibly can (at least this is enjoyable for those lucky people that can sleep on planes) and finally to be served a full breakfast when you wake up. Also you have 60 popular movies to choose from if you feel like lounging around and watching a movie. Or you could always bring a laptop and do some work. Travelling on such a long haul flight isn't that bad for the lucky few that can fly in First or Business class. Some can actually enjoy the level of removal that you get from normal everyday life.

Of course I would personally prefer to spend the time at a luxury 5 star hotel with a king sized bed and spa, but a Raffles Class Spacebed is decently comfortable and the food is good.

I was in NY at the weekend on a staff ticket (thank you dude) and saw a Singapore Airlines crew getting off a bus and going into a posh hotel (may have been Crowne Plaza Times Square, can't remember but you get the idea) and I realise they might have only come from Frankfurt but just as likely to have done the nonstop service, and I'm telling you, they all looked absolutely fabulous. This is so true. Man I love long flights, the longer the better. I remember getting on a China Air Lines MD11 (in Mandarin livery) at Amsterdam Schipol going to Taipei, and on the screens in the cabin during boarding it said 0 mph / 0 altitude / time to destination 14 hours 10 (or some equally high number) and I just knew it was going to be a beautiful experience. With two exceptions (JAL NRT-SYD and Virgin Heathrow to Bombay) the long flights I did in 2005 were all beautiful, especially JAL from Osaka to Heathrow (man the day just goes on and on and on), Lufthansa Frankfurt to JFK with an upgrade, and a few others, BA to Toronto on a 777 was good, and there was a nice JAL 747-300 ride as well. And I have to say, these are real highlights in my schedule cos my phone is off, people bring me food, I can read for hours instead of a few minutes, you name it, I wish I could recreate the experience without having to buy a plane ticket, it's so relaxing.

You guys have got it all wrong. You can make a massive dent in pop culture by watching five or six movies, AND read half a book or even a whole book if you're a big reader, take some pictures out the window (I got some binoculars at a market stall for $10 and they have turned out to be an excellent purchase for long flights). Go spare? Oh man. I go spare when they pull the power off and I have to start putting on my shoes. Why would I want to land? Everything I need is right here.

In total, there are 26 "super long haul" (using the defintion as 14h+) flights to/from the US and Canada (There might be some missing, not sure).

They connect nine US/Canadaian airports with nine Asian/Australian airports. They are operated by three US/Canada and eight Asian airlines. The 747-400 is used on the majority of the routes - thirteen - are operated by 747-400ERs, but none of the nine longest are. There are six 777-200ER operated routes, five operated with A350-500s, one A340-600 operated route, and, believe it or not, one operated by a 767-200ER.

Most of the flights in that are between 14h00 and 15h15m in duration are less than 14h00m on the return segment.

TG also has the JFK-BKK flight which is going to be stopped soon; or has it already happened?

I did this segment back in May 2005 in Economy (not Premium Eco), and it was the best flight I've ever had. The flight duration was 17 hours.

The aircraft is configured with 37' seat pitch in Eco, AVOD, and the crew offered some great service (food was awful though). Every seat has a power outlet. On-board internet would have been an icing on the cake.

The aircraft is configured in three classes : Biz, Eco and Premium Eco. Eco and Pre-Eco were packed, while there were only 1 or 2 folks in Biz. I think it's pretty clear why Thai was bleeding money on this route.

I'll gladly take these long flights with increased pitch and a good entertainment system over some of the crappy shorter segments, most notably economy in LH.

BTW, I find it surprising that Singapore's A345s are not configured with Connexion by Boeing. They have it on their LHR and FRA-NYC flights. The problem is clearly not the aircraft, because SAS has it's A340s configured with Connexion.  confused

I don't know if anything over 6 hours overnight is not really tolorable to meI have done 3 times the non-stop flight between LAX and AUK. At around 12 hours in a conventional Coach seat with a rather full load (UA and Qantas), it was not particulary pleasant. As I don't sleep well on airflights so that probably is a factor in my experience.
By the way, on those ultra long-hauls, are there any live news reports available. I mean the world could be in chaos or a huge news story could be breaking for all that time you are in the air.

NOOOOOOO! I desperately do not want that. I love sitting around and having to do nothing other than occasionally whip out my laptop. It will make flying far less enjoyable.

SQ offer live text news updated ever hour by satellite through the KrisWorld system on certain aircraft. I would imagine the A340-500s would have this.

CX offer the BBC World Service Radio with updated news on all their flights.

That was included in MAH4546's list! And no it is not going to be stopped. It has reduced from 6x weekly to 4.

We are probably discussing the longest scheduled non-stop commercial flight, but I cannot see the wording non-stop anywhere.

Flight BA18 from MEL to LHR is 23 hours 15 minutes (BA17 in the opposite direction LHR-MEL is 21 hours 10 minutes) and this beats any of the flights listed above. True, the aircraft stops at SIN for an hour for refuelling and a change of crew, but the flight commences at LHR/MEL and finishes at MEL/LHR.

I take it you mean no stop flights. Because NZ1/NZ2 are freety long. AKL-LAX-LHR. All under 1 flight number.

I flew SIN-LAX last year, and it was one of the most pleasant economy long-haul flights I have ever taken. The extra legroom and the great entertainment made the flight extremely comfortable. The food was great, and they had snacks set up in the back at a common area where you could stretch your legs. I watched movies, sitcoms, snoozed a bit, and ate when I was hungry. I felt great when I landed in LAX.

Not to nit pick  Big grin but I have worked that flight before and I remember it being scheduled at 15:50. So I just went in to our system to double check and it is 15:50. I also looked at a cross sample of future dates as well to be sure. So that moves it up one notch!

I have had one of my greatest experiences ever on a one week trip to Japan. I had one of the craziest trips ever, but I loved every minute. I flew CLE-IAH, IAH-NRT. It was in CO's 772 with the art on the side (2 years ago), and I loved it. When I got there it went all over, but that's not the point. The way back to IAH wasn't bad either, but then I went IAH-LAX, and I was dead tired.

That flight is really close, it being 13 hours 50 minutes.

Is there any reason why SQ operates the flight to SIN from EWR instead of JFK?

Is there any sort of partnership/codesharing with CO?

How come there is only an 10min difference between flight departing from two different coasts. Is this because of the Polar routing?

I guess for smaller airlines it's harder to find 300+ passenger for a 14hr flight. The B787 will fit into the role very well.

Yes it is. A good example of polar routing is going from anywhere in canada to europe.
Vancouver - london is only marginally longer than Toronto - london yet it would take about 4.5 hours to fly between them.

These are the actual distances:
LAX - SIN 8770 mi
EWR - SIN 9535 mi

LAX - BKK 8262 mi
JFK - BKK 8660 mi

Polar routings do have an effect, but also winds are a major factor as well. Polar routings don't really have to deal with strong headwinds or tail winds since the plane will be flying perpindicular to the winds. Even though the flight from SIN to EWR's shortest and most direct route would be directly over the north pole, the flight usually flies over the North Pacific, near Japan, South of Alaska and flies across North America in the jetstream which would usually be near the US/ Canadian border. This is all to take advantage of strong tail winds. Route planning on these ultra long haul flights would be very difficult. It is a good thing there are computers to take care of these calculations.

Also does the LAX-SIN flight ever fly a polar routing? I would have thought that the most direct routing would take it quite far away from the north pole whereas EWR-SIN's shortest routing is almost directly over the North Pole.

even though EK's JFK-DXB is listed at around 12-13 hours, when I flew on that flight, it took approximately 14 hours to DXB and about 15 hours back......

SIN-EWR non-stop replaced SQ's existing SIN-AMS-EWR. SQ does brisk business on its JFK-FRA sector as well as the FRA-SIN sector, so they saw best to keep JFK-FRA-SIN going on the 744.

no..but they might if they get some 777-200LR's....

They might, but they seem happy with the cash cow route of SFO-HKG, hence why it will be the first to get the A380

Yeah, while the 762ER has more than enough range, the CASM on a route that long is not pretty.

A 747-400 did that in 1989, setting a new distance record at the time. The flight was 9,200 nautical miles long (17,039 km), non-stop from London to Sydney !

I have actually found a one-way deal with SQ for EWR-SIN for about £450 all-in, which isn't too bad for such a long flight.

There are two direct flights MEL-LHR: QF9 and BA18. They both stop in SIN for 1:30 hours, with a total travel time of 23:15. What is interesting is that they depart with a 20 min difference. Do they want to give each other company in such a long journey?  Smile

A non-stop MEL-LHR would be 9,100 nautical miles long (16,800 km!), 21 h long! Could the 772LR do it while keeping the flight crew in a good spirit?

Don't forget AC will have more nonstop from YVR to SYD and AKL plus YYZ to PVG along with PEK. Also they want to fly from YYZ to DXB and YYZ to Karachi. YYZ to BOM plus bring back YYZ to DEL and who knows maybe YVR to DEL or BOM.
