Transportation From OAK To San Francsico Downtown

Wed Jan 11, 2006 1:21 pm

I got a real cheap ticket price to OAK. However, I need to get to San Francisco for my meeting. Is there any public shuttles to take me to Union Square San Francisco? Does Super Shuttle serve this route?

Thank you for your help.

Hop an AirBART shuttle bus from the OAK terminal for $2, which will take you to the Oakland Airport BART station. The BART ticket will set you back $4 or $5... a steal compared to SuperShuttle. The trains will take you right into the heart of the city, just a brief walk from Union Square.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

I don't know about Super Shuttle or anything like that but when I flew into OAK and needed to get to San Francisco I took the shuttle bus that runs from OAK to the BART train station at the Oakland Coliseum. The BART (which stands for Bay Area Rapid Transit) train then takes you across the bay to San Francisco. I believe the shuttle bus charges $2.00 and the BART train is also about $2. Except for problems with the fare box on the bus leaving OAK the whole experience was easy and fast. Probably saves a lot of time during rush hour. Their should be a stop at Union Square.

As others have posted AirBART (bus) to BART rail is your best bet at a total of less than $10 each way (or at least last time I did it, in any event much less expensive and quicker than other optionas).

I remember last time as I was riding the bus to OAK, I looked up and the name under "Your Driver Today"... "Akilla U."*

Do as the others say. Take the bus and then BART. Just make sure you are traveling when BART is operating. They stay open pretty late and start very early as well. Here is the website...

You can also get transfers to the San Francisco Muni system if you need to get other places in SF.

This is the Powell Street station. And yes BART is by far the easiest, least expensive and less stressful way to get from OAK (or SFO) to downtown.

If you've not got a lot of luggage, then BART is definitely the way to go. The AirBART shuttle bus stops are well-marked (one in front of either terminal).

Put two bucks in the fare collector (just like a regular bus), and enjoy that 10 minute ride to the Coliseum/Airport Station. When you enter the station, to your immediate left are a row of BART ticket machines, which take currency or credit cards (however, if using a credit card, be aware that you will be charged for a $20 ticket). Don't let your luggage out of your sight...it's a dicey area at times, and thieves are on the lookout for newbies concentrating on the BART ticket machines.

You should go ahead and spring for a single ticket with enough fare for a round-trip back to OAK, that way you don't have to worry about getting a ticket when coming back. Any train will take you to SF EXCEPT the Richmond-bound trains, and the platforms are well-marked.

Get off at Powell Street Station. There should be signs denoting which station exit goes to Union Square (hint: Stockton Street is a closer walk than Powell Street, of course depending on where in Union Square your hotel is located).

I agree with those above, when I lived in SFO, and flew out of OAK, I would take the BART, easier than driving my car over The Bay Bridge and deal with traffic!
