Air New Zealand Loads LAX-PPT-RAR?

Wed Jan 11, 2006 2:55 pm

Was wanting to know if anyone had firm info on the loads on Air New Zealand's LAX-PPT-RAR flight operated with the 767-300ER. Also, if flying standby from LAX-RAR is there a chance of getting bumped in PPT or are you confirmed to RAR? Thanks in advance. Oh yeah.......RAR is Raratonga, Cook Islands and PPT is Papeete, Tahiti.

Yes there is a chance - it would have to be oversold though. For which dates are you travelling.

my understanding is that loads are usually quite heavy LAX-PPT and the a/c generally empties out quite a bit there before continuing on to RAR , if you get on the LAX-PPT you would have to be pretty unlucky to get bumped at PPT , however , in the other direction ( I assume this is not o/w  Wink ) because the RAR-PPT is often very light and the PPT-LAX very full there would usually be a higher likelihood ( depending on dates/loadings ) of ending up stranded in PPT , which is of course a pretty damned expensive place to be stuck

PPT LAX is very popular, and usually sees high loads - witnessed by the fact that its always virtually impossible to get FFP seats (in business).

I flew PPT RAR AKL last year - the PPT RAR flight was really quiet - and got busier for RAR AKL

Aerorobnz................not sure on dates yet. We are thinking of an ID90 out of LAX. I thought I read somewhere that there were no local traffic rights between PPT-RAR, so basically if we got on in LAX we would be on until RAR. This is a tricky part of the world to fly in!!!!
Does anyone know the loads from say AKL to RAR????

If you are going as a non-rev, I believe you are exempt from traffic rights rules.

Does NZ own Cook Islands or something? Or do they fly this b/c these islands(ex. PPT) dont have a carrier?

The Cook Islands are not part of New Zealand. If they were, NZ would be able to sell the PPT-RAR sector. The NZ island hopping service dates back to the days when aircraft didn't have the range to make AKL-LAX non-stop and have continued because NZ has a strong place in the market and UA feeding it on the LAX end. Also, given that it is a 763ER, it is almost impossible not to fill those flights

I am sure that NZ has traffic rights on this segment ( not sure whether they are capped or unlimited ) ... but there is not very much traffic to carry between RAR and PPT

NZ publishes a fare PPT-RAR, so they must have traffic rights.

I thought at one stage (many moons ago) the Cook Islands was a NZ dependency?

Either way, they are beautiful, and well worth a stop over...

The Cook Islands uses NZ currency, which is a bonus when you go there for a break.

You can fly PPT RAR on NZ as a passenger.

On an ID90 you are subject to local traffic rights - try flying DUB SNN on DL for example using a staff ticket. You cannot.

There is an agreement between the Cooks and NZ. People from the Cooks are free to move and live in NZ. That generates a lot of VRF traffic between NZ and the Cooks.
If I remember correctly, the agreement is in place due to strong mythological/historical ties between the Maori people in NZ and the people from the Cooks.

I found the following side. It has interesting statistics for all carriers serving Tahiti and their loadfactors to certain regions.

http://www.pacificislands.cc/pina/pinadefault2.php?urlpinaid=19185

Seems NZ's loads between PPT-RAR are quite low.

As nonrev. If the flights between PPT-RAR are full you will not be cleared so no need to worry about getting stuck. Flights have been going out hit or miss. Fridays wasnt oversold. Just be aware the flight does get weight restricted for time to time so.. I can tell you tonight we had several nonrevs left off as LAX-AKL flights 1 & 5 were packed.
