Why Will BMI Not Buy Any More A330's?

BMI for over the last year has been clearly short of Long Haul aircraft to operate new routes they have been launching and have been leasing aircraft to plug the gap.

As many people have stated on here the aircraft they have leased have clearly fallen short of the standards and comforts of their own A330 fleet which they clearly advertise to potential passengers. For Example - The PTV's throughout the aircraft, the "New Economy" class they offer and the general comforts of the A330.

When will they place another order for more A330's?

When they finally find routes that are profitable with the current A330 fleet. Five years on, and still failing.

Bmi should focus on shorthaul business routes, and stop ruining the bread and butter business they have killed... or is it too late?

My 2006 prediction - Bmi will not exist by year end as an independent UK carrier.

That would be a shame, BMI are the best airline from DUB to any london airport IMO.

British Midland ordered four A330-200s and took options on eight more. I think that was when they had hopes of a UK-US Open Skies deal. Before the fourth was even delivered they passed it on to EK and soon leased out one of their remaining three A330s to SAS. From an anticipated fleet of 12 they've only ever operated three and seem to have struggled to make a go of these. Yes, another A330 or two would fit with their existing fleet but I suspect the're loath to throw more good money after bad. But they're caught in the middle. Without a fourth or fifth A330 they've been using a dog's dinner of bits and pieces that cannot do much for their image. They should either bite the bullet and invest in an extension to their existing fleet or abandon ambitions to go long-haul.

(Or, they could just sell out to Branson and the problem would disappear...)

Shame really
Flew BMI MAN-ORD and back from IAD to MAN on the A330's
a few years ago, service was great and great entertainment.
Both flights where full.
BMI seem to have lost the plot since then, pitty....

I fly this route with BD every week.... I disagree - Poor punctuality, poor schedule.

I fly them because they are absurdly cheap... because of the above.. (oh, and I get free lounge access)

They know it's not worth it. They have tried everyting now and seem to be failing in everything.

I'd agree, this might be BMI's last year.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

The only profitable division is regional apparantly.

WW is having a real tough time in BHX and MAN... EMA is a disaster.. so that leaves CWL and MME. Oh dear.

Longhaul speaks for itself - its in bits, and lack of investment speaks for how profitable it is.

BMI (mainline) is also struggling.. Amazing that the CEO states they are going after high yield passengers after they spent millions advertising tiny fares, and killing diamond club.

I've just shy of 225k diamond club miles, and i'm buring them soon.

If LH take them over, they will be converted to Miles and More.
