Zurich Airport Operator Charges For Deliveries...

Thu Jan 12, 2006 8:25 pm

Following an article in a swiss newspaper,Unique , the Zurich airport operator,is requesting all delivery companies to pay 50 CHF ( about 30$) per delivery to any company working at ZUR airport.
This is grotesque and unheard of - Swiss claims they would have to pay 3 M CHF just to comply with this new fee. Seems they learned from mafia some lessons but now voices are raised to contest the legality of this tax...

Have you ever heard that the Swiss do something free of charge?

OK, that was for jokes, but the harsh reality is that we have new EU laws that everything that goes into the secure area of an airport must be screened. Applies to people as well by the way. Fraport has spend 30 Mio € just for the facilities at the various gates to the red ID area. Plus 500 new jobs. I guess Fraport will spread the cost over the users fees as well.

That would justify the charge. But may be our Swiss friends have a better explanation.

Well Unique needs to finance a huge new built facility which is way too big for the current needs.

As a matter of fact, they now charge CHF250 for airport badges instead of CHF10 (yes, trust your eyes!).

That means an additional CHF100000 of costs for "SWISS International Air Lines".

Just as a comparison, the Fraport "green" personal badge costs about € 50,00 and is valid for 3 years. The "green" car badge (opens the gates in the general cargo areas) costs € 100,00 and is valid until the cars next inspection date, can be up to 3 years if the car is new,

I understand that the annual fee in ZRH is something like CHF 2600,00. Opens new prospects for entreprenours, consolidate off airport and outsource the final delivery, making full daily use of a smaller number of vehicles. Send a PN for Bank account on which licence fees should be remitted  Wink)

All this is nothing new, I remember from jobbing during my student years in Hamburg that the Railways charged the operator of the platform kiosk for the right to operate hand-pushed cars needed for supplying the kiosks.

Just a other example of these Airport operators, it just seems they do not
get it, most of the carriers are struggling and these guys are building
like there is no tomorrow....................... and we have to pay for it.

Is there any major AP in the world witch actually started to stream line there
spending??? since 9/11???

RJ100 you are right with the 250.00 it is ridicules.............

Yes guys, RJ100 is right with those 250 CHF for a badge. But this airport called "Unique" is in fact "unique".

They face several problems:

-LX as their main customer with still a future which is already safer than it was but not really known yet
-Big competition from real hubs around as MUC or FRA
-Due to it's runway system limited capacity
-Huge noise problems, on one side with the German neighbors resulting in approach restrictions early morning, late night and weekends and on the other side with the Swiss neighbor's who don't want the noise either. Actually they face an interpelation the Citizens of the Canton of Zürich need to vote about in the near future, limiting them to 250'000 movements yearly and a 9 (!!!) hours night-ban!

So you see, ZRH airport operator Unique has problems on all sides and they have nothing better to do than to chase potential investors away with this absolutely overpriced politics of business they do. Quo vadis....... ?

Such evolutions are not good at all and show us a kind of arrogance the responsible management has in it's attitude. I just hope they will be replaced before it's going to be to late. At least BSL airport will have it's benefit of it. They lost their main operator Crossair as well and had a huge expansion in progress. But they realized the situation and attracted other operators. They are on the good way as GVA is and most important: They are in the favor of the passengers around Switzerland.

Cheers

Quoting RJ100 (Reply 2):

you could say the same about the new "huge" facility at BSL/MLH and would be equally wrong. What about a bit of reserves for once ? Airports with a load of 130% are NOT what is needed. Facilities should be built for the future and NOT just for the moment. The REAL problem of "Unique" is that they lost all what SR owed them for quite some time, and built the facility exactly when SR collapsed.
-
That their methods to "cash in" are ridiculous however is clear. They clearly exaggerate their part.

ME AVN FAN: The facilities in Basel are expected to take around 5 mio. pax every year. In 2005, the airport had 3.3 mio. pax and this year 4.3 mio. pax are expected in BSL/MLH. This is a big difference to Unique which has an airport capacity for roughly 40 mio. pax while pax figures are way below 20 mio. right now.

Right on the spot Legacy.................. it seams unique management is doing there best to put ZRH out of business.

No one will dispute the fact that an airport has to improve there facilities as the grow but how much did ZRH grow????

I have BEEN in BSL not too long ago and have to admit to be astonished as I thought there would be a better reserve. But as soon as the Schengen-matters become REALLY implemented, the capacity of BSL/MLH will get up. But another expansion-move will become necessary within two or three years nevertheless. The figures for ZRH you give INCLUDE the Dock "B" which at present is out of service and rented out. True, the 40 mio. ARE a bit much, but mean that not much new needs to be built in the foreseeable future. In case of a positive development (overall, NOT LX ! ), the only "job" to be done is the re-building of Dock "B" .
And to repeat it, I am in favour of a reserve of 50% of what is around right now .

I have been around BSL airport since my good old DHL times back in the late
80's and just before x-mas I had to take a flight with ESY to CDG and in opinion they have some spare capacity to absorb extra volume.

However ZRH .................. I do not know what they were thinking, yes B dock out of commission witch cost money like maintenance, utilities.... and I am pretty sure it cost Unique more bling bling than they actually receiving
from renting it out to .......................

Cheers,
