Spot The Common Denominator

Below is a list of 17 North American carriers past and present.

Can anyone tell me what do the airlines in List # 1 have in common with each other. And what do the airlines in List # 2 have in common with each other.

List no. 2 = Former 747 operators

Of course it was the new thing, and revolutionary in air travel, but did these airlines really not realize they weren't going to be able to sell ~400 seats on routes that weren't necessarily filling up much smaller aircraft?
