Fastest Service From Auckland To New York

Sat Jan 14, 2006 4:43 am

Air Tahiti Nui launches the fastest way to travel from New Zealand to New York on 26 March 2006.

In just 18 hours and 15 minutes, with a short transit in Papeete, you can be in a yellow cab heading for the Empire State Building. The east coast of the United States and even the Caribbean is now an easy hop for kiwis who no longer have to leap-frog over California.

The new service means customers can stopover for a dip in the crystal clear ocean of Tahiti and her islands only if they choose to. Air Tahiti Nui has changed its schedule to allow direct flights to New York instead of the current 24-hour lay over.

Three flights per week from Auckland will depart on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and return Mondays and Wednesdays in just over 20 hours.

Airbus A340-300 are the most comfortable aircraft in the skies. Each customer has a personal video screen and Air Tahiti Nui's understated and attentive cabin service has been a major factor in winning three consecutive accolades as Best Pacific Carrier in the annual Skytrax Awards.

A nice trip! It goes 3 times a week each way, but stopover in Papeete varies, at least from the US.

AKL-JFK on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving 1305, arriving 1525: a trip of 4hrs 50 mins to Papeete, a stop of 1hr 10 mins, then 12 Hr 20 min.

JFK-AKL on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving 17.15. On Mondays and Wednesdays, arriving AKL 0540 after a 1 hr 45 min stopover in Papeete. On Fridays, arriving AKL 1115 after 7 hrs 20 mins stopover in Papeete.

How long does it currently take on the QF AKL-LAX-JFK service or with NZ and UA from AKL to JFK through SFO/LAX?

Looking at the QF web site for May 2006, it offers the Air Tahiti Nui flight via Papeete as a code-share, and correctly gives 18 hrs 20 mins for the flight as total duration of the trip. The next quickest trip it offers is QF/AA in 19 hr 11 min via LAX (with a 2 hr stopover), arriving JFK at 2106.
Looking at the NZ web site, the quickest trip offered in May is NZ/UA in 20 hrs 28 mins via LAX (includes a stopover of 3 hrs 15 mins) -but it arrives JFK just after midnight. The next quickest is 24 hrs 30 mins.

A stop in Papeete is still better than dealing with the hassle at LAX and risk missing your connection.

Somewhat off topic, but is Tahiti Nui looking to become a member of an alliance? I thought I heard something about Star a while ago, but I could be wrong on that one.

No, never star as NZ have the pacific covered for Star. However TN was looking at joining Skyteam but for some reason this fell through. I don't think that they will be joining an alliance now although Onewourld looks like it might have some benefits for TN as they already codeshare with QF and JL(which is joining soon) and I believe that they have some sort of FFP arrangement with AA.

I had noticed they have changed their schedules, SYD also changes days I think and gets an additional service from March 26th.

QF only offered this service for a short time when they ran a second AKL-LAX flight several days a week. I believe the second flight was offered for this exact reason, to connect to JFK. Not sure how many people were actually going through to JFK but loads were always high on the AKL-LAX sector, on both flights! Now you have to change to AA. Not sure what its like on NZ/UA.

Glad to hear this...I've read that the flight is struggling, and if this is what it takes to keep it going, then it's excellent for all sides.

Did they consider SYD-Papeete-JFK?
