HP 920 And 932, Convoy To Hawaii?

Sat Jan 14, 2006 7:56 am

I noticed on various flight trackers that both HP flights to HNL and OGG from PHX leave within minutes of each other and are in almost the same location about an hour into the flights. I know it's a big blue sky out there, but does anyone know if the planes follow each other until they get near the islands? Any pax or crew been on these flights?

They would obviously be routed TO Hawaii on a particular VOR radial, however at different altitudes, then be split off to their respective destinations.

I thought they did that to draft off each other, you know, like NASCAR.  Wink

You don't want to draft off of a 757. Bad things happen

If you dig a bit deeper you will see that there are are concentrations of flights leaving for hawaii by many airlines from places such as LAX, SFO, and NRT at similar times as well. We get strings of arrivals all at once here in HNL, and I believe it is the same story at KOA, OGG and LIH although not as heavy. If you fly on UA to/from the islands and are able to listen to Ch. 9 during cruise you will hear the same 7 or 8 flights chattering, then as you approach your destination you will hear them sequentially check in w/ center. Listen enough and you will recognize the flight by the pilots voice.

You don't mean the overwater portion, do you?

Yeah these arent the only two flights HP has that leave at similar times, or in the case of Hawaii the same scheduled departure time. PHX to all three bay area cities are all scheduled within ten minutes of each other during all the flight banks.. JFK and EWR leave at about the same time.. MCO, TPA, FLL, and MIA all leave within a ten minute period.. and the list goes on. Then there are cities like SAN, LAS, and LAX where there are two flights scheduled to leave at the exact same time, multiple times throughout the day.. interesting schedules.
