Are There Any Airlines Not Too Happy.....?

Sat Jan 14, 2006 8:17 am

Hello all

I couldn't find a post but there has been talking way back in the past but I thought I just like to hear any updates. My question was are there any airlines not too happy with their respective members within the global alliance of Oneworld, Skyteam and Star Alliance? Well all know in the past when 5 members of the Star Alliance was formed the 6th partner Varig joined few months later. Then Oct 1999 ANA officially becomes Star Alliance members and Singapore Airlines officially gains Observer Status to join Star Alliance. We all heard Thai wasn't too please to hear Singapore Airlines wants to join the Star Alliance, we all know they are competing head to head in south east asia and the pacific route. Lots of people believe Thai would leave and join Skyteam that was their wishful thinking but so far they are still with the Star Alliance. So any other airlines in similar situation please tell us about it.

comments are appreication please.

I recall MX was member of the Star Alliance but they left after some time. I wonder why they actually left.

I know that OneWorld members have been upset with American in the past for lack of west coast service at LAX, which was one the reasons why AA purchased Reno Air. That purchase apparently didn't change much, so you see airlines like Qantas partnering up with Alaska and America West for code share connections.

If I do recall is MX didn't want to renew agreement with UA because they couldn't reach agreement.

What could they not agree on? Just really curious.

I found a site where it doesn't give details why it left.

QUOTE ( Mexicana will become the first Star member to exit the alliance voluntarily after the carrier last Friday notified United Airlines, a founding member of Star, that it is not renewing its seven-year code share and frequent-flier cooperation agreement, which expires March 31 2004. )

You will have to scroll down to airline news in alphabetical order. From A to M

Here's another site

QUOTE ( United, Mexicana end codeshare agreement
United Airlines and Mexicana Airlines have decided to end their code-share, frequent-flyer, and lounge-reciprocity agreements effective March 31, 2004. Mexicana will also leave the Star Alliance at that time. Travellers that have purchased a ticket on an itinerary, including a Mexicana code-share flight scheduled after March 31, will be fully accommodated. Award reservations on Mexicana must be booked and ticketed before midnight (local time) December 31, 2003.

I guess they both are not satisfy with the agreement?

As far as i know. Mexicana wasnt happy with the agreements with United Airlines. Wasnt convenient for them comparing with AM was doing with Delta, some people say even AeroCalifornia was getting some good benefits from AA when they had a kind of agreement comapring with the MX with UA. IT worked for awhile but not great, it never did. Not good route connections to other cities in the U.S specifically. Comparing than now with American Airlines.

So if 2 of the members couldnt fix their problems in the alliance one would have to leave..If Mx would want to renew its agreement woith one of the partners would have to leavr. Being kicked out wouldn't cost a fine, but to quit it would...so Mexicana not making the renewal of the agreement with United for that and some other reasons. automaitcally was out without having to pay a fine.

IF YOU HAVE NOTICED, Mexicana actually never had problems with Air New Zealand, Lufthansa or Air Canada..You can notice that even now they have bilateral agreements with Mexicana..

Mexicana wasnt kicked out for bad service or low standars of quality. I worked both in Am and MX, being MX the last one i worked with when they actually got into Star Alliance.. I really was into the inclusion of MX to Star Alliance./.. I met people from LH and Star Alliance when they were visiting Mexico City...they were really amazed of how the airline had that legacy and standar of service prior the alliance..

I am pretty sure MX will join One World but probably late this 2006. Under grupo Psadas will look even more atractive to that alliance.

I believe ( though I cannot find the source ) that there is a two year stand down period as part of MX termination of Star membership before they can join another alliance - that will be up on 31 Mar this year ... it will be interesting to see what happens then ... wouldn't be surprised if they are announced as a OW candidate on 1 Apr .
