Air China says no decision yet on which air alliance to join
01.16.2006, 12:29 AM

BEIJING (AFX) - Air China is exploring the possibility of joining an airline alliance but has not reached a decision yet, a spokeswoman for the Chinese flag carrier said.

'So far no concrete decision has been made as to which specific alliance we are going to join,' Air China spokeswoman Rao Xinyu told XFN-Asia.

Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper quoted Deutsche Lufthansa AG's chief executive as saying Air China and Shanghai Air are set to join global airline group Star Alliance before the end of this year, but Rao did not confirm this.

'Not only Star Alliance, but also other alliances (have expressed) an interest in the role Air China can play in their alliances,' Rao said.

'We are studying the feasibility of various alliances and we are now at the end of the process to see which alliance will most benefit the company operations as a whole, and which alliance will best accommodate our strategy and our future,' she said.

Rao did not give a time-frame for the decision but told XFN-Asia that Air China is trying to speed up the process.

'We will try to make it happen as soon as possible. It will help the company if we can make a decision earlier,' Rao said.

'I cannot confirm the particular time that the decision will be made,' Rao added.

Air China is looking into which alliance best fits its business model and strategy, and the individual carriers that make up various alliances may be influential in the airline's final decision.

And China Eastern to Oneworld and China Southern to SkyTeam? It's been looking this way for a while.

I wonder if CA's hesitancy has anything to do the Cathay's recent stake?

I really wonder about this news. Mr Mayrhuber is one of the most powerful man behind Star. I wonder why he makes such comments without any confirmation of neither Star nor AirChina.

The only plausible answer to me is that he wants to press CA's decision in his way. I wonder if it will pay off.

Shanghai Airlines in talks to join Star Alliance group

SHANGHAI Airlines Co Ltd, China's fifth biggest carrier, said it plans to join Star Alliance, the world's largest airline club, to expand its international market.

The Shanghai-listed regional carrier started talks with the alliance as it hopes to rapidly grow its overseas business, said Xu Junmin, board secretary of Shanghai Airlines.

"With the global aviation market opening up, Shanghai Airlines hopes to grab the opportunity and expand its international routes," Xu said. "Joining a global alliance will help establish international presence as our flights now are mostly domestic-based."

Shanghai Airlines has had close cooperation with Germany-based Lufthansa, one of the founding members of Star Alliance, on code-sharing, frequent flyer programs, ticket booking and marketing.

It also has a code-sharing program with All Nippon Airways, a Star Alliance member, which has tied its frequent flyer program with Shanghai Airlines, said the carrier.

Air China, the nation's flagship carrier, is also reportedly closer to a membership with Star Alliance.

The carrier declined yesterday to comment on its plans.

Air China has had extensive cooperation with Star Alliance founding member United Airlines on code-sharing flights, frequent flyer programs and shared airport lounges.

Well, at least one Chinese carrier that is aware what LH has in mind with them  Wink

FM is a good airline. They will be very much welcome. But I think their flights are somehow split between both Shanghai airports what makes connections a little bit more difficult and limits the opportunities.
From this point of view CA has a better hub.

I believe when the 2nd terminal at PVG is completed next year, all will be improved.

This will be good news for NZ if their plans to fly to PVG go ahead. I wonder whether FM will code-share with NZ?

Looks like Shanghai Airlines may join ahead of Air China. According to the article below, we can expect an announcement mid year.
