BEIJING (AFX) - Air China is exploring the possibility of joining an airline alliance but has not reached a decision yet, a spokeswoman for the Chinese flag carrier said.
'So far no concrete decision has been made as to which specific alliance we are going to join,' Air China spokeswoman Rao Xinyu told XFN-Asia.
Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper quoted Deutsche Lufthansa AG's chief executive as saying Air China and Shanghai Air are set to join global airline group Star Alliance before the end of this year, but Rao did not confirm this.
'Not only Star Alliance, but also other alliances (have expressed) an interest in the role Air China can play in their alliances,' Rao said.
'We are studying the feasibility of various alliances and we are now at the end of the process to see which alliance will most benefit the company operations as a whole, and which alliance will best accommodate our strategy and our future,' she said.
Rao did not give a time-frame for the decision but told XFN-Asia that Air China is trying to speed up the process.
'We will try to make it happen as soon as possible. It will help the company if we can make a decision earlier,' Rao said.
'I cannot confirm the particular time that the decision will be made,' Rao added.
Air China is looking into which alliance best fits its business model and strategy, and the individual carriers that make up various alliances may be influential in the airline's final decision.
