BA To Cut 1500 Jobs In Move To T5?

Tue Jan 17, 2006 12:49 am

Sunday Express says up to 1500 jobs may go when BA consolidate their operations at LHR in Terminal 5. They cite Deutsche Bank researchers as their source.

BA said the report is "pure speculation", stating "Terminal 5 is a major focus for us, but it has not even been built yet. It is far to early to be talking numbers at this stage."

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well, there will be job cuts on the build up to T5, as instead of operating from 3 terminals, it will be from 1, so it makes sense that certain jobs will be no longer be needed.

While its a bit early to be thinking numbers now it makes sense that with the move from 3 terminals to one will mean that some duplication will happen and I'm sure that BA want more people to make use of things like print your own boarding pass etc which will also cut down the amount of ground staff needed.

Speedbirdcrew has it right, while the numbers are speculation, consider the rise of self service tickets, printing boarding passes etc, consider that the machines are shoehorned in where possible, for example in T4.
T5 will have rows of them.
T5 has been designed from the start for this and other automation advances.

Nice PR statement. It's far too early to talk about the numbers, but you can bet your last dollar BA knows what the numbers are.

I think BA will look at some natural wastage between now and the opening of T5, some people will retire, some people will leave of their own accord. I doubt BA will replace these.

However, as with any "merger" there will be duplication, so no doubt there will be some job cuts!

shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.....yeah, it will mean some job losses, but those are unlikely until the airline is in T5 and actually knows how well things work and how staff function within the facility. As for the exact numbers, well those outside analysts should let BA determine that when the time is right rather than trying to rush things and get people all worked up.

Actually, BA continues to recruit quite heavily at LHR....this has basically been an on-going process over the past year and looks set to continue over the next year. BA learnt its lesson about not having enough manpower to over its operations in recent years and won't be making that mistake again soon.

Out of curiosity, how many staff does BA have at LHR? And is 1500 job cuts, spread over different functions, a realistic number, or really "speculation."?
