I've just got back from a weekend in Zurich (it's a bank holiday in the UK today) and this is how it went.
Got to JER at c.0600; nice morning, but quite a heavy downpour a few minutes after I arrived; BA check in agent was new and took forever. Good seat - 8F - and acft was 'SJ ("Water dreaming" scheme). BA crew, as ever, very nice and I "chanced my arm"; initially, I was told no, as he was a new pilot (to the 320), but as we were delayed, the captain invited me up. As it happened, I got it all the way!! Way to go. London was beautiful, out and back, beautiful clear day with wonderful views of the city - dome & ferris wheel both visible and LHR seen from ten miles out. Good landing and parked over at unusual gate, so we had to bus it to baggage area. Used LHR Flight connections centre for first time; quite efficient. A little worried as I saw SR 321 landing (had hoped for M11), but the 321 was doing GVA.
Flight dep. sched. for 0945; we pushed back at 10.35. Hmm . . . It was, however, an MD11 (IWM) - which, frankly, was all that mattered to me. Unfortunately, it was also a crew training flight. Cabin crew were, however, very nice. Surprised at smallness of brunch, but it did hit the spot and crew v. generous with extra drinks and croissants (very nice & flaky - the croissants, not the crew!)
Told weather in ZRH was fine at 10 degrees. As we came beneath cloud, rain splashed against window. Not altogether a good sign, weatherwise! Good, firm landing - not too heavy, runway 14. Rain cleared up after a while. Stored bag in lockers and went into Buchair shop. Nice selection of goodies, mostly models, although there's a new 747 book I saw (In English) which I'd like to get sometime; however, this year's JP was out, so that was the choice.
Zurich. Well, what can one say. Good? Doesn't have cover it. Spectacular, wonderful, unbelievable - just go see the w/site and you'll see. From the end of the spectator's area, with a 300mm lens, you have just fabulous shots of widebodies taking off. (most small ones used 28). Added to that, you have BRILLIANT tours of the airfield, which take about 30 minutes. What other airport (exc. FRA) gives you this? And there's a parking area near the rwy intersection where they stop for about 10 mins. And for 3SFR? I mean, there's nothing better value than that in the whole of Switzerland. An A++++ airport.
This morning, checked in early; fairly wet day. Good c/in guy, checked all the way through to JER and two window seats. Acft was an A330-200, which was what I wanted - another first. Boarding at 7.10; slightly delayed departure, 7.36 v. 7.30, but that didn't pose a problem. 34 in use, left side seat; this can offer some spectaculr views for US flights, as they circle over airport; ours went straight on, but good views anyway. Seatback videos, v. comfy seats, great SR crew. How do you top that? With the j/s into LHR of course! 27L today - lovely approach and great views again; great weather in London.
Well, you get the general idea; SR was great, ZRH was great and I was thrilled with the whole thing. Although I didn't think the M11 was anything like as nice as the 330 (still looks old on the inside, for some reason), I'm delighted I got it.
