What Will Happen - US/UA Merger.

Mon May 29, 2000 11:41 pm

Hi all

Well what is going to happen with the Airbus aircraft after the UA/US merger.

Will the A330's be repainted into UA livery?
Will future orders/options be cancelled?
Will US be kept as a separate company?
Will be see a new airline name?
United States Airways?

Anyone want to discuss?

Regards to all

I doubt the A330s will be painted in United colors. Initially, they will bear the United name, but not the full scheme. They will be sold off or leased very quickly.

the A330 and A321 orders will be cancelled, or aircraft leased to other carriers.

The name of the airline will be United Airlines

Dear Mr. Watt,

A behemoth United would, in my view, probably keep both new United Boeing planes and new US Airways Airbus planes, for political reasons, at least for awhile. You probably know that Star partner Lufthansa has an open 50-50 buying policy regards the two manufacturers, and does so profitably.

Also, United is trying to please everyone under the sun to get this buyout approved (with insubstantial measures that should fool no one, btw) and the EU has expressed reservations.

In any case, as one forum discussant noted, the two carriers use different engines on their common model types, which will cause financial indigestion in any case.
