BA Using 777 On Manchester To Gatwick Today

Thu Jan 19, 2006 10:12 am

I've just noticed that BA are using a 777 on the lunchtime service to Gatwick.BA2914 is scheduled to arrive at Manchester at 12.35 and depart back to Gatwick 30 minutes later why would BA use such an aircraft for a 30 minute flight

Its probably a repositioning flight. EG plane needed at LGW for a flight and the one at MAN is the only one available.

BA don't operate any 777s on scheduled routes to / from MAN, so this wouldn't be the reason.

Not sure why they'd be doing this, one possibility is the a/c has just come out of maintenance at LGW and is on a test run of some sort?

It is not the first time that BA has used the 777 on LGW to MAN services. Occasionally the 777 is sloted in, perhaps due to availability of the aircraft when the usual 737s are undergoing maintenance.

I remember when BA used to occasionally use Concorde (sub-sonically of course) as a stand in aircraft on the LHR - GLA shuttle. This was partly to attract more passengers on BA's services with the possibility that their Trident might be substituted with Concorde.

It also did LHR-MAN on occasion. Mainly when the aircraft was needed up at MAN for charter ops or the early arrival from JFK was diverted into MAN because of weather problems. Sometimes they positioned it back to LHR using a shuttle overflow flight.

There could be other reasons why the 777 is doing the route, for instance group bookings for longhaul flights leaving from or arriving at LGW connecting to MAN. I can't see any football fixtures which might explain it though.

It also did LHR-LBA every now and then......amazing to see it land and depart that "tiny" little runway 14/32 ("tiny" compared to LHR/JFK/CDG)..... biggrin

Apparently both of the first 2 LGW-MANs were cancelled today, so as above, this is to take all of the 'stranded' pax up instead....

I'd say they're probably missing a 737 or A320 in LGW. Because on tuesday one LGW-AMS-LGW run was also done on a 772...

Very possibly. But in addition, BA often use the B777 betwwen LGW & MAN for crew training purposes.

Often? Including this example I can think of only two occassions in the last 12 months when a 777 has been used on this route. Have I missed something?

I'm looking at the 777 now through my office window at MAN. Makes me wonder (again) just how successful a two class high density medium haul 777 operation from Manchester could be!

Hi All

The reason that a 777 has been used is due to 4 tech a/c at LGW in the last couple of days we have cancelled 8 flights and combining two together.

On Tuesday the 777 G-VIIT did the following route LGW-AMS-LGW and LGW-MAD-LGW

and today it was doing a MAN run.

GB airways also had a tech a/c and had to combine some of its services.

Hope this helps

At least it was a 777, if it would have been a 342/3 it would not have even taken off, just taxied from MAN to LGW  Wink

I spotted this on Wednesday night at work while rebooking a pax onto it from a canx flt in the morning. I just stumbled and he asked what was wrong. I said ur flying on a 777 which was odd, he laughed and said i used that to go to the states last week lol.

Only one other time have i seen ba use it. That was 7th July Last year.
Nealry got on it as well. Had a booking. But we canx just as we got on our LHR flts, the bombs had gone off in London, and all our parents were calling Sad
AND THIS TIME I WAS AT WORK lol. Did see it though, be it from the office window. Oh well, maybe next time
Where does the time go???

4 tech a/c, typical DOC's then

I did this on G-VIIO on July 7th, was fantastic, but a shame that something else also happened that day Sad, was a strange day to say the least!
