Xtra Airways Applies For Mexico, CR And DR

Thu Jan 19, 2006 10:52 am

Xtra Airways has applied to the DOT for authority to serve Mexico, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic with scheduled service from the US:

Do I have this right - Xtra Airways is the old Casino Express reborn?

cheers

Yeah, I think one of the Icelandic or some Euro carriers brought a stock and renamed them

Interesting city pairs:

SDF-MEM-CUN
SFB-CUN
SFB-PUJ
SFB-LIR

plus

ATL to CUN/PUJ/LIR

I also wonder where they will be picking up the 734s for the routes. Though, since they are not daily flights they may not need all that many.

The Avion Group has controlling interest in Xtra. The first two aircraft a B737-400 & 800 are both ex AirExcel aircraft. The 400 was TF-ELP now N42XA and the 800 was G-XLAG.

They do plan to recieve more aircraft. The B737-200s have been sold and are no longer flying for CXP. Also they will end the Red Lion Casino flights at Elko, Nevada on 2/1/06. However the Wendover flights will still operate.

The routes will all be flown for Vacation Express, hence the slightly odd routings. From what I have seen, the fleet will consist of a mixture of 737-400s and 737-800s, with the -800s only operating for the winter season. I think since they are partly owned by Avion Group, the parent of Excel in the UK and Air Atlanta Iceland, that at least some of the aircraft will come from them. I think they are also operating a program out of Logan for TNT using a 737-800 leased from Excel (should be G-XLAG).

They are already flying the Boston stuff with the 800 a couple of days a week.

I see a lot have been flown with Pan Am Clip Conn and Champion Air 727s lately.
I wonder how those trips do.
They have a 3 night one from BOI Feb 7 for $59. Doubt they will get 60 pax.

If these flights are for Vacation Express, I take it they are not new flights and therefore isnt new compeition for DL. Even if they are new flights, the frequencies wont bother DL too much
