When Will AI Start Serving SFO

Thu Jan 19, 2006 8:16 pm

Hi,
it has been discussed here some time ago, that Air India was about to start services from India (BOM or DEL) via Europe (possibly FRA) to SFO. Does anyone have news on this?
I couldn't find any official statement on this from AI but would be happy to know as I will be flying to California end of March.

First they need to get there 744 fixed and out of in LAX. They must be feeling the loss of this one.

What's that got to do with a long term plan for starting operations to SFO ?  Confused

I guess by the end of this year, when they start receiving new aircraft from Boeing, things may start happening....till then, it would be the same old story of not having enough aircraft, etc..

Exactly what you said not having enough aircraft. Was said being sarcastic as they have had the 744 sitting in LAX. It appears that it is not going any place to fast. Would be great to see AI expand sooner rather then latter to SFO. Would also be great to see the 777 in LAX.

On 13th January when AI signed the 68 aircraft oreder with Boeing, they stated that the new aircraft would enable them to start new routes that their passengers demand like DEL-NewYork and Mumbai-SanFrancisco.

That was said by their CMD, V, Tulsidas...

So as of now until the 777-200 LRs come in no chance of starting a SFO service, or you may never know if demand is great they might as well have one via FRA and one Non-stop service.

If you're keen to fly AI to California - your best bet is to fly to LAX! I don't see AI starting SFO services any time soon (unless they manage to lease a new bunch of aircraft).

Boeing states that
"deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2006"
for the first of the new aircraft. So it may take some time before new services are started.

Thanks. That's what I'm going to do. As I am going to spend some time in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, it is the same to me. I was just dreaming of flying FRA-LAX and on the way back SFO-FRA. But so I will have to take the train (or a local flight) two times. No problem.
Thanks for the hints.

The ticket on AI should be common-rated for SFO or LAX. So buy a AI ticket to SFO, and you should get the LAX-SFO-LAX sectors at no charge (probably on AA or UA).

My travel agent told me that was only possible when AI operates the flight LAX-SFO-LAX itself, not over a partner airline. Is that not true?

Slightly off topic, but currently, are AI pax from New York allowed to catch the flight or get off at either EWR or JFK? Or is the ticket issued for a specific airport only?

It depends on how they decide to file the fare. In most instances (including how they have it filed now) you should be able to - but they have everything filed such that you can only stop over in europe. Right now the LAX-SFO would sector out as a seperate charge included in the price of the ticket. Say it's $500 FRA-LAX/SFO-FRA.. if you wanted to stop in Los Angeles then continue on to San Francisco then stop for a couple of days.. then continue back to Frankfurt... the stopover would be in the US so at an additional charge.

That said, the difference in fare isn't so bad.

I'm not really up on AI as much as I used to be. I know they don't have a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement with anyone in the US as yet, but do they have an airline that they partner with regularly?

A friend just sent me this link to an article about Air India opening an office in San Francisco. A travel agent is cited to have been "waiting for 28 years" for that!
