In terms of terminal floor area I think it is.
: 220,000 sq. meters divided in 2-3 floors
: 470,000 sq. meters divided in 6 floors
T4S: 287,000 sq. meters divided in 5-6 floors
Total: 977,000 sq. meters...10,5 million sq.ft. of terminal buildings.
To give you an idea:
: 360,000 sq. meters divided in 5 floors.
: 530,000 sq.meters. World's largest terminal building.
: 530,000 sq. meters including terminal Building, Concourses T, A, B, C, D, and E.

Will the existing T1, T2 and T3 terminals be renovated?
Maybe they should recieve a small facelift in some areas although they look way better than many other major airports I have been to. I just don't know why Barajas recieves severe critics about it's aesthetics...I guess many people should see MIA
, the old terminals at LHR
's south terminal as well as one of the terminals at MAN before critizicing MAD
in such a way. Although it's being renovated, ORD
was also in VERY bad shape when I went there in 2004, and the awarded T5
as well as T2
felt terrible. My only BIG complaints about Barajas airport are: lack of jetways, BAD catering facilities, filthy restrooms..and lots of Spaniards. Yes...you read well...LOTS of Spaniards. I know this may sound strange, but being as proud of my country as I am, I also have to admit that the average Spaniard needs to learn good manners. Anyway, this doesn't only apply to Barajas but to all of Spain, but doesn't have to do with the topic being discussed here.
I have never been in Barajas while in transit since it has always been my departure point/final destination but one thing is for sure: I have NEVER felt the "chaos" sensation that many describe, my departures/arrivals have always been without incidents, the baggage claim lounges are very decent (the ones in T1 are VERY spacious), and overall the airport looks cleaner and in better shape than many other airports like the ones I mentioned above.
Plenty?...maybe 2 or 3, and that is difficult to know. It also depends on what do you mean by "size", e.g.: land area? terminals size?
In terms of land area I think that the world's largest airport is in Saudi Arabia.
Of course ORD
in aircraft movements and passenger traffic, but in terms of physical size I think they're very close to each other. Remember that MAD
has been expanded to cope with the traffic increase for the next 15-20 years.
Btw passenger traffic at MAD
increased 8,8% in 2005. The final pax count according to AENA was 41,96 million.
