IAM Keeping Members In The Dark On NW Proposal

Sat Jan 21, 2006 12:36 am

It's been almost a week since NW announced it had reached an "understanding" with the IAM on a contract settlement proposal, but the IAM has yet to release any details to its membership -- only fueling widespread speculation and rumors about what the proposal may include for IAM represented employees at NWA. I'm just curious if there are any other IAM represented employees out there and what your thoughts are about our union. I know they've been getting a lot of flack (rightfully so, IMO) throughout this whole negotiation process, particularly for their speed in reporting things to the membership.

Also, if any one else has any rumors as to what the proposal may entail, share them! Why not...

Go to www.iam143.org and it will give you an update. I believe the last update was last night at 2100hrs. There has been an update pretty much everyday. I don't know what you expect the IAM to report. They have to make sure that everything they report is correct. Just be patient

Yeah, just got the details today at work. I'd like to see how the membership is going to vote. So many small stations will be outsourced and people will be displaced. If there is a lot of bumping systemwide, it could create a lot of problems.

We are getting mixed reviews here in OKC. The Enhanced Severance Package is the only thing that is good in the whole contract. I think the Contract will pass but just by a little bit.

I'd say it's uninvolved members who have no concept of what a negotiating comittee does as well as the intricacies and importance of specific language to a contact. If you would read your email (if you've made sure they have your adress) you would see that as late as 48 hours ago the negotiators called the company back to clarify points. Why should they put out information that is not yet set in stone? And now, only 48 hours later, you can see the proposal yourself in your email and the union site.

Of course this is hellishly stressful, more so for the younger members who have less knowledge of the proceedings, but give a little empathy - none of us has been through a BK abrogation threat before. If you don't like the way your union is handling it get involved more.

Edited to add: Anybody wondering which stations would remain Northwest-handled stations, page 30 is the place to look.

What emails are you talking about? I have been VERY involved in the union. But unless I am a full time member of the negotiating committe, this union's membership was left in the cold for a week. Some of the TA's in that proposal were agreed to years ago. They could have at least announced what was agreed upon, and then clarified the rest. If there was so much to clarify in the first place, why then would the union haphazardly agree in the first place? M404, I don't know which side of this argument you stand on, but it seems obvious you have not been in my shoes while this bankruptcy process has been going on.

Hey NWBOS, did you look at the proposal. How do you think everyone in BOS is going to Vote. I believe there are going to be people like me that are going to takethe enhanced severance and then run, cause I don't see this airline being around this time next year.

Well, right now I am part time because I am back in school (I see the writing on the wall too). What they want to do to part-timers is bad. I'm sorry, but 30 hrs/week is NOT part-time. I'm sure Wal-Mart considers that full-time! I think there are a few that will take the enhanced severance. I don't know if I'll be laid off because of bumping (nearby MHT and PVD will be outsourced), but it's hard to say how everyone feels. I think the feeling right now is that the pilots will strike, and, if that happens, we all know we are doomed.

I have my resume out to about 15 Corporations all are not in the aviation industry. I think I'm going to get a 0900-1700 M-F job.

This contract looks a lot like the one we voted on at United. The only difference is the outsource of smaller stations. The pilots aren't going to strike. We all know what happen to the AMFA guys. We heard all the hot air from our pilots and FA's during our court hearings also.

NWA had a job fair yesterday, Friday. They are hiring for CSA and ESE. Does anyone know how many they are hiring and why are they hiring?

AMFA's strike was prepared for by NWA. If NWALPA or PFAA strikes, stick a fork in NWA.

MSP DTW MEM HNL IND IAD LGA PDX ORD JFK LAX ANC MCO PHX MKE TPA DCA DFW LAS BNA SEA BWI ATL MSN BOS MDW EWR STL MCI CMH DEN RSW GRR FLL PHL GRB SFO FNT IAH MSY

All would keep NW staff? Did I read that right? That is a lot but not as many as I thought. I was expecting only MSP, DTW, MEM, PDX, SEA, ANC, and BOS to be left.
