FedEx: No IND Expansion

Sat Jan 21, 2006 7:11 pm

This is from the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Saturday 21 Jan:

FedEx has no plans to expand in Indiana
By The Commercial Appeal
January 21, 2006

Indianapolis has been speculating wildly that FedEx Corp. is ready to expand there, perhaps launching nonstop flights to China of its yet-to-be delivered A380.

FedEx seems just as perplexed as the rest of us.

There is no contract signed between FedEx and the Indianapolis airport for any expansion," said spokesman Jess Bunn.

"We're building a $150 million hangar here for the A380, and the airport has expanded its runway," Bunn said. "I would say those are pretty good signs FedEx is staying in Memphis."

FedEx will begin receiving the A380s in 2008. The first in the world will begin flying this summer when Singapore Airlines receives the first of its order. As passenger planes, the A380 can hold 555 people. As cargo freighters, the "flying skyscrapers" will carry nearly twice the weight of the MD11, the workhorse at FedEx.

There is no contract, no immediate project for IND. However, there is no secret that once MEM reaches saturation for FDX, then IND will grow.
The only reasons IND will have to wait a little bit more are:
- More space for FDX in MEM, with the National guard area;
- the new strategy to transfer to FDX ground a part of the express volume, to better manage yelds in all the division. (there will probably never again be a double digit volume growth in the US domestic express sector; the market has reached maturity)

Correct.. there is no signed contract.... yet. Fedex just a few days ago launched a 2 month study aimed at expansion at IND.

I don't think Indianapolis expansion would have anything with FedEx being based out of Memphis. But the company can benefit from multiple hubs as Memphis alone cannot handle the volume that FedEx needs.

There may not be a contract, but there is definitely the possibility of major expansion in Indianapolis.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

RF.. I think the expansion is very likely. This Memphis news report looks to be damage control. Just my 2 cents.

Look at what the report says. No signed contract. Also says the $150 million hangar as a good sign Fedex is staying in Memphis. Nobody said they were leaving. That reporter needs to understand that the study comes before the contract. Not the other way around.

Ok.. Ok.. Ok... But when is the expansion going to start out for AFW???

J/K
I remember when they cut our volume at AFW because MEM wasn't as efficiant as the new hub and needed a certain amount of flow to still turn a profit. (Just what I was told by management) So it would seem that MEM is about at capacity. So IND would be the next expansion.

I remember that AFW was built specifically to expand. To do all international flights to South America and Middle America.

I have been out of the company for a year or two so if I am wrong about any of this then please let me know... I just kinda miss loading DC-10's and want to know what my old company is up to!
I'd like to thank me for flying Me Airways...

I think that the Star (Indianapolis' Newspaper) went a little out of hand with the FedEx expansion at IND. It sounds like the airport authority and FedEx are in talks only, and the paper ran with that idea as a story about the A380 coming to IND. Just a little bit of sensationalism...

Well.. with IND being on a very short list for possible stops for the Fedex A380F it really isn't sensationalism. It would be if they were talking about scheduled passenger service on the A380.

Someone on here was yelling that IND would be bigger that MEM for us.  drunk

All the A380 we receive will fly international ops out of MEM. The expansion in China will be huge. I've heard the Subic Bay hub is moving to Bejing. Our senior manager here at AUS is actually in a very advanced program that would allow him to be the big dawg in Bejing for FX.

Bet the pilots won't mind   My dad, a former MD11 Capt, hit a bat coming out of Subic a few yrs back and declared an emergency to Manilia. His reasoning was he didn't want to fly back to Subic over the mtns, in the dark, and discover the bat's wingman went through another engine.

Back on point, why would FX want to have the 380 at IND in the next 5-10 yrs, yes I'm aware of the 2008 delievery slots, when the US domestic cargo mkt is/has maturing/matured, and IND doesn't have the intl volume as some of the other stations?

Need I remind you of this?

"Have you ever actually seen our Ops at MEM...comparing it to IND? AFW, EWR, hell, even OAK is larger hubs for us."
RE: Article About A380 And IND (by Indy Jan 15 2006 in Civil Aviation)

You completely missed it on AFW, EWR and OAK. Before you try poking fun at someone elses information in which you have nothing to back up your claims I'd recommend getting the information straight that you do give out. IND is the #2 hub for Fedex and Fedex has circulated plans that would make it #1. You should try contacting Fedexexpress if he is still a member on here. He has a copy of plans that Fedex had circulated that outlined expansion at IND a few years back.
