Airport PA Announcement Lady

Sun Jan 22, 2006 7:17 am

I was surprised to hear the same voice doing the automated public address announcements in both Houston IAH and Oklahoma City. I think I've heard that same lady's voice in other airports too. Is this a computer voice or an actual person?

Our announcement lady does Ms. Microphone in both English and Spanish at BWI! Now, I like the Burl Ives meets down home radio announcer voice at ATL. I wonder how is his Spanish. But, I still get the biggest kick out of the trains and trash cans that talk to you at ATL! Also, the Bella La Gossy,
Kelsea Grammer voice that proclaims: You are entering the transportation
zone.

There is a decent chance of it... IED [Innovative Electronic Designs] has a virtually monopoly on transportation PA systems (and has a really nice product line) including, IIRC, IAH (and CLE, LAX, EWR, LGA, JFK, LAS, ORD, Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, the Pentagon, and a few NASA facilities...).

IED does have in house voice talent and can, IIRC, deliver updated recordings (via the internet or dialup phone connection) to properly equipped client systems. In addition to recording to your script, I think they also have prerecorded messages that you can purchase*

How do I know this? My former employer (a state university) opened a new library complete with an IED 500ACS system...as one of the (two) A/V engineers for the campus I got dragged to the training session for the thing and the IED rep offered if we wanted any announcements, he'd be glad to throw in a free package using the "voice from LAX".

I also have the programming/administration reference in a box...

Lincoln

* - (Ours had, IIRC, for no apparent reason "The white curb is for the immediate loading and unloading of passengers only", "Unattended vehicles may be towed", and a few other very bizarre messages for a system inside a library)

I know the woman you mean. In American airports / ports I kept hearing it.

In the Staten Island ferry terminal it was

"The Animals you see working in this terminal are for your safety, please do not distract them from their work (sniffer dogs)"

And in JFK something like

"Unattended baggage is a security rick and may be removed and destroyed in accordance with TSA regulations"

Only in the US though. I assumed the TSA sent out standard messages.

Great, now a.net has gone from the perfect place to discuss real aviation business and technical information, to petty a vs. b wars, to the announcement lady... What's next? Someone going to announce that UA will be the launch of the A380 and A350? o wait...  footinmouth

In Gerona (Barcalona) there is a recording of the word Ryanair and when the make an announcement about any ryanair flight in any language they press the button to get this very posh English voice say Ryanair and then continue the annoncement until the word ryanair has to come in and the button is pressed again.

On the Airplane! Dvd, ZAZ was saying that the man and woman that made those announcements made the equiptment and actual announcements at LAX. is this still the case?

Sorry, I should have been more clear... they have a virtual monopoly on the equipment... you are free to use their announcements, record your own, or load just about any audio file you wish.

They do, also, hype an Automated Flight Announcement module that seems like it would eliminate the need for humans to do anything but the boarding announcements (and those could be recorded and played on demand), but I've never heard it in action.

I have heard that the man and woman work[ed] for IED, and that they were indeed the voices used at the time, but I can't certify the accuracy of that statement as it was an in passing "If you've ever seen..." type remark.

DL has prerecorded boarding announcements. The only place I've heard it was RSW, but I have heard it

When visiting MEX for the 1st time in 1992, the lady making the terminal announcements was practically seducing me to stay. She would speak with a half coo, half whisper, when making departure announcements. I wish a recording of her was available.

Perhaps the MEX a.netters will be familiar with the voice.

Actually if its the sameperson that does PVD's then I know the answer

At an airport conference i was talking to the exhibitors that did these (probably the company referenced earlier in the thread) but he said the lady behind the voice was one of their secretaries.

At DAB some of the announcements are actually the operations assistant. She is visially impaired and when they first put the announcement on, it was confusing her seeing eye dog when they walked through the terminal!

The automated voice at FRA is cool the way it announces in English and the language of the airline or country of destination.

At JNB and most of the airports here the voices are real. But some announcements sound a bit weird. In DUR they say "South African Airways flight SA.... a departure flight to Johannesburg, now boarding at gate..." A departure flight, wtf?

At ELS they used to say "passengers travelling on XYZ are requested to take leave of their friends and loved ones and make their way to the departure gate". That always had a tinge of doom for me!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

They have them almost everywhere now. I'm sure some of the podunk airports don't have it yet but everyone I've been to wit DL in the past year has had them. We've had it in ATL for quite some time now.

We have them in ORF as well. It's funny listening to that thing cycle through all the zones back to back trying to catch up while boarding an early-morning MD88 with 8 zones but only 20 pax, because it goes through the entire announcement before going to the next one. So by the time you hear "We would like to invite our passengers on Delta Air Lines flight zero zero zero with service to Atlanta seated in Zone 3 to board through gate 7 at this time." they're already boarding Zone 6.

At least in Atlanta they pronounce "Norfolk" correctly on the announcement, although the gate agents never do. (It's pronounced "uck", not "olk".)

By the way, the female voice in Atlanta that does the non-smoking announcment ("The city of Atlanta has limited smoking in the airport...") sounds exactly like Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura).

Just a question. Why did Delta spend money on these prerecorded announcements? Seems like a waste to me, when you have agents who are more than qualified to use their own mouths and a microphone to make the same announcements. Delta should just go back to the old way, this system is annoying.

Very true!!!

I think it's the best one I've heard in any airport. Her voice sounds sooooo relaxing. They seem to be using the same person/system still. Works pretty well.

I don't know if it is a recording though, most likely it is.

The article may have been in Airliners or Airways...
