EVA Air started LAX-PTY services during 94 or 95. Origionaly EVA wanted to create a mini-hub in PTY with onward services to South America, and was planning on forming a Panama based airline. The EVA group has huge business and property interest in Panama. Follwing a change in government in Panama, which would now not allow the creation of a new airline, the service was reduced to twice weekly and was meant to serve as a connection to the companies big interest in Panama. Finally following a 1999 decision by the Panamanian government to not extend a lease in the canal zone to the EVA group of some of its property, and instead lease it to a red Chinese company, the EVA group began a slow reduction in business activity in Panama. This flight, which was operated by a 747 Combi, which rarely carried over 100 people was now no longer needed. In addition it did not help that COPA announced the launch of daily PTY-LAX service with 737-700's at the same time.
