EVA Air Stop Passenger Service To Panama

Tue May 30, 2000 10:10 am

According to United Daily News, EVA Airways is stopping its TPE-LAX-PTY (Panama City) route due to low passenger numbers. But it says it will code share with a Panama airline on the LAX-PTY leg. EVA Air currently flies to PTY 2 times a week. The last flight is on the 31 of May.
Has anyone been on EVA Air's LAX-PTY route? How is it?

My friend has been on it, I'll ask him. Just an opinion, but I think that route was started because either EVA want South American codeshare connections or that Taiwan has such a good relationship with Panama (Panama is one of the few countries that recognize Taiwan, I think), or both.

I checked the OAG and it shows the June issue will be start new service by COPA on 737-700 flight daily effective June 2 between LAX-PTY. I can see show it still service Eva Air between LAX-PTY in June. When do you hear the route will drop? Thanks..

I just got the news this morning of the newspaper's homepage. (although it is in Chinese..)
Yes Panama is one of the very few countries who still recognises The Republic of China (Taiwan's official name). EVA Air used to be a good airline, but now the standards has dropped since the asian crisis and they started to drop routes and cut services and after the crisis the level of service did not go up and instead they focused on cargo routes. To be a bit exaggerated I think they will become a solely cargo airline like FedEx and UPS.
Tell us what you think about EVA Air. (in America)

EVA Air started LAX-PTY services during 94 or 95. Origionaly EVA wanted to create a mini-hub in PTY with onward services to South America, and was planning on forming a Panama based airline. The EVA group has huge business and property interest in Panama. Follwing a change in government in Panama, which would now not allow the creation of a new airline, the service was reduced to twice weekly and was meant to serve as a connection to the companies big interest in Panama. Finally following a 1999 decision by the Panamanian government to not extend a lease in the canal zone to the EVA group of some of its property, and instead lease it to a red Chinese company, the EVA group began a slow reduction in business activity in Panama. This flight, which was operated by a 747 Combi, which rarely carried over 100 people was now no longer needed. In addition it did not help that COPA announced the launch of daily PTY-LAX service with 737-700's at the same time.

I've flown SEA-TPE-SIN on EVA and TPE-SEA in there Super Business Class seats and I think there service was excellent. All three flights we're full...744 SEA-TPE; 762 TPE-SIN; and 744C TPE-SEA; I absolutely loved flying in there upper deck although I didn't like the 44" pitch because my knees started to cramp, but there food and their cabin crews we're extremely pleasant!! Their 762 was a little beat up in the interior but the flight was excellent. I especially like how all the ground crew salute you after the plane has finished taxiing from the gate!

This doesn't come as a surprise - I thought EVA started the Panama route also for its Shipping services (Evergreen Shipping). Malaysia Airlines was the other Asian airline flying into Central America before with EVA Air and also withdrew from Mexico City due to poor returns.

MAS may return to MEX - interestingly - especially if Malaysia Airlines joins OneWorld...Mexicana had expressed an interest in code-sharing on the route.
