2 Cars Vs. Virgin Atlantic 744 Very Cool! (Video)

Mon Jan 23, 2006 6:28 am

Here is a pretty funny/intresting video of 2 European cars put to the test against a Virgin Atlantic 747-400, with 4 engines with 50,000 lbs. of thrust pouring out behind each of them!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1309610693318372088
Enjoy!

Haha, that video is great. Too bad they only actually used the two inboard engines. I'd love to see something like a semi-truck driven behind it.

Well I had not seen it before, and it looked pretty cool. I have heard about how bad the wash can be, but it is interesting to see it in real life. I was told many times to never taxi close to a jet while in a C172.

And the rule of thumb is that unless it is a brand new video to the internet, it probably has been posted here before. But if no one ever reposts these things, new users or people that are less frequent users may never see anything.

I agree, I've been coming here pretty frequently for the past half a year, and I've not seen it posted here. If nobody posts these things that are old, most of us won't see it.

Naw I wish. I have a Pontiac GTO, which is really a Holden Monaro, which is also sold as a Vauxhall Monaro VXR and they tested it on the show and said all kinds of great things about it. I think it even beat some ferraris and aston martins around their power lap course.

Still, a cool video all the same, but a blatant copyright violation  Smile

Well, on February 2, 2002, a cab got blown away by a VASP Airlines a/c during take-off at SDU airport (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The car rolled over a couple of times, and the driver got ejected against a nearby rock wall... Unfortunately the 68 y/o man died at the hospital.

Mythbusters tried this once at Mohave but they were not allowed to use any of the airliners parked around the place, even though one landed during the filming! So they ended up using a small turbo jet on a truck which was not up to the job. Just rocked the car.

Moral of the story, if it wasn't for the invention of the fan jet we would not have the big engines, the big planes, and the mass air transport we enjoy today.

This reminds me of another video I saw late last year:

When I was taking the computer-based driving tests needed to get a SIDA badge at IAD, there was a video illustrating what happened if one were to drive too close to an airplane starting its takeoff roll.

If I remember correctly, the video was set at SFO, and involved an old pickup truck being set loose (engine running in drive without a driver) next to an airplane (UA B767 I believe) starting a takeoff run from 28L. As the airplane increased thrust, the truck flipped over several times before impacting the waters of San Francisco Bay.

It was part of the computer-based course emphasizing the need for drivers and personnel to keep well away from airplanes with running engines.

Did a poor job of blurring out the Virgin on the tail. My question is, who cleans that up? Certainly you can't leave chunks of twisted metal in the grass, or bits of glass on the runway. Talk about a headache. Anyone have any idea of what airport that was at? Pretty spendy to tie up a 747 and a runway for a TV show stunt.

What is worse is that they attempted to do it at certain times in the video and then did not even bother at other times, when there was a full length shot of the aircraft.

Nevertheless, a great video!

Top Gear's test track is at an airfield, I believe, so I wonder if the 747 was just stopping by...

Regardless, that show has an absolute ton of money to spend. They do some pretty incredible tests/stunts with some rather serious cars. All of the shows are available via torrents, and I highly recommend viewing an episode or two.

Edit: Dunsfold Park - that's the name of the Top Gear track/airfield.

Yep. That video has been around for a while. I also read one time (maybe here in fact) that the people that produced that video got in trouble for ? not having the correct permits and ? not bleeding all the fluids out of the car before blasting it into the bay, therefore polluting the bay. At least, something along those lines.
I've got things to see and people to do.

The BBC isn't allowed to advertise, hence why they blurred the logo out.

I think they should run the same test, just swap the 747 for a 777 with some GE90's!! I'd like to see what over 100,000 lbs of thrust could do.....

Yes, I saw that too in my airside driver training course at MAN.
I got too close to a MYT A330 when it was lighting up it's engines and it made my van rattle alarmingly. And that was just at idle!!

It never ceases to amaze me how those wonderful aircraft we love and admire so much from the terminals and viewing areas suddenly grow in to great white sharks when one's out on the apron.

Is it me or is there something not right with the video.

The first car, the Ford Mondeo is driven behind the 744 and it is blown away when it passes behind no2 engine. when it is re shown from another camera angle, its the no3 engine.

Ditto for the 2CV hippy car.

From the flips, damage, etc. in the video, I'd assume from my storm-damage experience that the "wind" caused by those engines is at least 150mph at the point where it impacts the car. Does anyone have a more educated (in terms of jet engines) guess than that just out of curiosity?

I had never seen this before either. What gets me is that Mythbusters would even think that this could be a myth. There have been many accidents like this over time. It is not a one-off event. In fact, on flightlevel350.com, there is a training video of a truck getting blown over.

I see that.. But we obviously know what airline and aircraft this was. This is because the BBC did not block out Virgin Atlantic at every opportunity to do so.

Just being knit picky. Sorry. This has been discussed before, nevertheless.
