Ryanair Surprise "Big Bang" Announcement 25/01/06?

Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:28 pm

Just read this:

Quote:
Ryanair has apparently invited for simultaneous press conferences across Europe at very short notice for tomorrow 25JAN06, 12am.

The invitation states that they will reveal a pioneering improvement of the low-cost concept and the news will be a "big bang".

Anyone in the know what they are up to ? A frequent flyer programme, as Germanwings and Air Berlin both already have one ?*

*Source: PPRUNE

Any ideas what it could be? I don't think it will be a frequent flyer programme - Ryanair are not known for spending money on things which emulate full service carriers.

Frequent flyer programmes aren't needed to reward loyalty. Instead, continual low fares and great value is the best reward you'll ever get.

Anyway, I have a fair idea about what the announcement could be.

There has been some talk about replaceing tickets with revenue from on board gambling.

I am not sure what the licencing requirements would be for that.

I am also not sure that it would generate enough revenue.

Another possibibility is that they were talking about no luggage being allowed some time ago. I do not believe that they will simply leave the cargo hold empty.

FF programme, I think not.

Thank goodness for that: it'd be deeply unprofitable with ever-spiralling costs if it did.

Perhaps the "pioneering improvement of the low-cost concept" will be following Flybe and charging passengers for checking-in luggage and rewarding those who do not with lower fares and higher hand baggage allowance?
But I think there may be more to the announcement!

That will hopefully happen (see my posts regarding this in another thread).

I don't think it's going to be as big an announcement as it's being made out to be.

Don't forget that online check-in (with printable boarding cards) will also almost certainly happen at some stage - and would go hand-in-hand with the pay-for-checked-in-luggage concept.

this is still a long way off and I'm not sure how feasible it really is? For example, whats to stop me from booking a ticket because i 'may' want to go away this weekend but then change my mind and not go.

I have a friend and for valentines day every year he always books 3 resturants, all they need is your name maybe phone number, but if you don't show up it's no big deal, he just picks the one he wants to eat in on the day but this leaves a table for 2 free at 2 resturants. I hope that makes sense.

It won't be to do with bases if it is as described, namely a 'big bang' - unless it is to involve either a) the creation of a lot of bases or b) the creation of a very unusual base. I don't think it'll be either. So, what would make it revoluntary? I learn towards the gambling - that'd be unique, I think - but pay-for-checked-in-luggage or, more exciting, online check-in (which, in time, will go hand-in-hand with PFCIL) are more probable at this stage.

I also don't think it'll be as big as everyone's expecting.

It has to be OLCI - how else are FR going to squeeze those additional flights through Dublin and Stansted?

OLCI is a big bang for LCC's. It will save them a fortune, with no need for CUTE terminals. - oh, and they will beat BMI by about three days also

Who the hell would want to buy AZ, except to simply get it out of the market (I'll offer 10 EUR)? When - not if - AZ ceases to exist, there'll be lots of routes to pick over, but I wonder how many are profitable, considering AZ is government-owned and thus not profit-driven.

Nope. The advantages of no-frills travel would be eradicated with long-haul flights. And there isn't, in quite a few instances, any real point, fare-wise.

I suspect that a high proportion of AZ's loss-making routes would be profitable IF they were not run by AZ. The profitable ones would make much more profit if AZ were not running them.

A Big Bang.....let's see
Oh now!!! Swapping their fleet from 738's to A320's.... that would be a Big Bang!!!  devil  ...  laughing

In my -humble- opinion some possibilities:

1) On Line Check-in
2) Permanent lower fares for passengers without luggage (compensated by higher fees for luggage carrying passengers)
3) Not allowing bringing your own food and drinks on board and by this increasing on-board revenue
4) Installing some monitors and continiously showing commercials.
....

more hilarious should be:

5) Pax have to clean their seats prior to landing....get out via the back....new pax already boarding via the front (L1).... turn-around time 15mins.
6) You can fly for free if you bring your own fuel

FR.... it's a concept with a tremendous success.... but not something I like.
I used "it" once and probably will use "it" again but for my real travel I prefer the full-service airlines.

Air Asia implemented that concept. I don't know how it worked. I haven't flown FR for probably 6 months or so now, but when I did sometime last year I did see a notice to the effect that you are not permitted to consume your own food or drink aboard. Needless to say, I ignored that - and didn't get into trouble.  angel

That's right although you have a few possibilities:

1) A fine (a fee) if you got caught eating your own food.
2) Sniffer dogs at check-in ...  laughing
3) Public humiliation in front of all passengers and as a punishment you have to clean the plane afterwards.

You're right it sounds easier than done.
