SU Still Undecided On 787/A350

Wed Jan 25, 2006 5:41 am

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2006/01/24/041.html

Boeing and Airbus are competing hard for Russian business and seem intent on doling out business to secure Russian aircraft orders. Of course they are going after things they need, like engineering services and raw materials.

Interestingly, Boeing is claiming one third of the 787 is designed in Russia. That seems like quite a bit for just the nose section, even though it is a complex piece.

First, it's Airbus. Then it's Boeing. Then it's Airbus again. Now they're undecided. I'm glad the ones in charge of purchasing the planes aren't going to be the ones flying it.

"Oh look, there's a cow on the runway."
"Should we go around?"
"Maybe we should."
"You think so?"
"Well, then it might be gone by the time we get there."
"Okay, so we'll continue approach."
"Yes. But then, perhaps we should play it safe."
"It would be worth the extra cost of a missed approach."
"See, you bring the cost up and I think we should just conti-"
CRASH!

This whole SU order is a political nightmare. If SU order the 787, European politicians are gonna cry foul. And if they order the A350, America is gonna remind them of the help they've received over the years.

I certainly would not want to be a member of the committee as SU and Moscow who have to make the decision!

They will decide how Putin tells them to decide. If they don't, they'll never work again.

I am sure they know exactly what they need and want and I do not belief the are buying ac's based on what the US or EU thinks they should get.

Oh I'm sure they do know what they need. The trouble is Putin doesn't give two hoots. He'll tell them to order whatever plane gives him the best political position.

It is interesting that Boeing is planing to offer the AN-72 for a proposal to the USAF for a short haul air cargo aircraft. Why not the A400?

Wonder if there is any relationship?
Now so, have ye time fer a pint?

Yes, but didn't SU already go with Airbus for narrowbodies? That should take away some of the heat from the European politicians, I would think.

Maybe because A400 is twice the size of An-72 and USAF already has a C-17?? Big grin

Ahh make it real easy!! Sink the money into the Russian Aerospace market!! Purchase the il-96M which is now the IL-96-400. Get the up rated PS-90A's or Go shopping around for new engines on her, IE Rolls Royce, or GE?? Too bad P&W walked away a few years back, as I think the IL-96M would have been a hell of a contender. Would be nice to see a few more of those birds in the skies!!  Smile

How many times does someone have to point out that Antonov is not a Russian company?

Antonov is from Ukraine, which although once part of the USSR when that existed, is not part of Russia.

Therefore the decision about which plane SU will buy is incredibly unlikely to be influenced by the purchase or otherwise of transport planes from a neighbouring country.

Antonov was the design bureau right? Where was the An-24 actually built?

There's little relationship really between the C-17 and A400. The latter is a replacement for the C-130, a totally different machine than C-17.
