Do You Do This?

Tue May 30, 2000 11:11 pm

After I walk down the gate to get on a plane, I touch the outside of the plane. I like the feel of it. I've done ever sense my first trip on an America West 737-300. Do you do this, if so, what kinds of planes have you touched?

I do exactly what you said!! I always touch the fuselage and if the plane is an AA Md-80 I always give a tug at the oneworld sticker near the door (just to see if it is still a decal). Freaky, isn't it?

I always do this too when I walk onto a plane!! I don't know why, I guess it's like a tradition.   I've done this ever since my first flight (on a Reno Air MD-83). I also like the feel of the outside fuselage. I just touch it and think Wow, this was outside at 37,000 feet in the air. Don't you ever think that too?
One time, I was boarding an Asiana 747, and there was a long line on the jetway, so I was touching the outside of the plane for like 4 minutes until the line started moving, and the people in line were staring at me like "What the hells wrong with that kid, is he crazy".

Of course ever since I was 4 i have done this. I remember boarding a Lufthansa A-320 when I was 7, and we were boarding using stairs, and I just touched the door. (I am fascinated by airplane doors-I would love to just open and close one   ) Well I guess I am not the only plane crazy person with quirks then huh?

Hey

I don't touch the airplane. I knock on the airplane. I did that only one time, I just wanted to hear what noise it makes. There were no people behind me, because I was the last one boarding the airplane.

btw, it sounded good

Greetings

Yes I did that and got filth on my fingers. Yikes, those planes are dirty!

That is too weird. I give the plane a lttle pat on the way in. It’s kind of a way of saying “Nice plane, get me there in one piece.” It’s become kind of a tradition for the last 15 years or so. The planes I’ve done it to are too many to list.

I've got to admit that I give every aircraft I fly in a friendly 'pat' just as I get on board and ,yes, I've had some strange looks too whilst doing this.I've given 'pats' to various Boeing aircraft (707,727,737,747,757,767 and 777s),Airbus (A300,310,320,330 and 340s),Bae (748,146,HS121 Trident),Bristol Britannia,Vickers Viscount,DHC-6,7 and 8, NAMC YS11, DC9,DC10 and MD 11 and some very old Russian jobs including (AN2,AN24,TU134,TU154,IL18 and IL62)

Whoever closes the door... do they check this area to make sure no one has damaged it? Cause you know that most people who walk on the plane touch the side of it. Just curious!!

Yeah........I do it all the time............kind of like I'm feeling to see if it's solid enough to get me there in one piece.

The fuselage skin is very smooth and the work on the flush rivets and seams always amazes me.

RE: Do You Do This? I Do And How!

I thought I was the only one. As a non flying child, you only get to see the great jets from afar. I look up and see the jet--and it's 35,000 ft above--barely visible. And then, one day, you drive by an airport, and you see these giant planes much closer, taxiing and taking off, and even flying RIGHT over your head!!!. And wow, how exciting! So when I finally had the chance to actually BOARD one at the advanced age of 41, I was in a state of AWE as I walked down the jetway and up to the door, waiting for my turn to walk through the door. I look through the space between the fuselage and the jetway edge, and I see the giant engine at the end of the body ( DC-9 ) and I think: I cannot believe I'm actually about to get on one of these!! Quickly I reach out and touch the fuselage with my hand and I notice how smooth it is and I look at it and I pat it a little bit. And I think: So--this is what my very life will depend on!!! And I touch it once again, turn and walk through the door, and pray that God doesn't suspend the laws of physics today and will allow this thing to actually lift off and FLY!!!!!!!!!!!
