NWA And UA 747s In Europe

Thu Jan 26, 2006 1:55 pm

Where do NWA and UA 747s fly to now? Are they mostly used for Asia or do some still fly to Europe, and if so where in Europe? I recall seeing a UA 747-400 at LHR in April 2004. I believe it was from IAD. I am sure this has been posted before, but as time changes, so do aircraft routes and schedules.

You'll see a UA 747 every now and than running IAD-LHR or ORD-LHR. Other than that yes, most of their a/c are going to Asia and SYD/MEL. Every once and a while you'll see a domestic 747 upgraded a/c.. saw a 747 flying ORD-LAX the last time I was at ORD.

Sorry, but have no clue what's going on with NW- someone else could probably answer that.

I believe that NW only uses the A330 and DC-10 to Europe.

The last time I flew on a NW 747 was on NW 68 in '03. I believe shortly after that they were moved to the pacific.

UA 916, IAD-FRA and UA917, FRA-IAD is typically a 744. Also, SFO-FRA is a 744 I believe in the summer, operating as 900/901.

They also will sometimes swap in a 744 on SFO-LHR in the summer.

UA919 LHR-IAD appears to be a 744 in winter and 777 during summer when LHR-IAD goes 4 Daily

UA955 LHR-SFO is a 744 during the summer

NP, but my question is, how come no 744 on LAX-LHR. UA finally put a second flight on the route (763ER) but the loads and yields on the route must be enough to support the Jumbo at least during the summer. In fact, there were major rumors of just that when UA realized that it is cheaper to run 744s not only by CASM but also by trip costs when they factored in leasing costs of their 772ERs

NW uses B747s in Asia only. EU is A330s a and DC10-30s.

United's 916/917 and 918/919, the Dulles to London and Frankfurt flights are 747s year round, not every now and then. This is true even when they add the seasonal 4th London flight during the summer and will be true when they add the 4th seasonal Frankfurt flight next summer

B744s and widebodies in general are quite tight at UA. I suppose the company might even wish they would not have returned as many as they did during the Ch11 process.

Anyways, after about 2 years of trying, LA finally got the 2nd LHR flight back. While not double daily 777s as in the past it will do.
With the shortage of B744s, LHR-SFO gets the upguaged on the 2nd flight, which is still 1 flight short of the 3 daily LHR trips they had a few years back.

Also another issue with LAX-LHR is that UA and AirNZ have crossed sold each other on the route allowing a 2nd nonstop flight to be available and marketed these last few years which has somewhat dissuaded the reintroducing of UAs own 2nd flight till this coming summer.

Our 747 aircraft are used from DTW-NRT/KIX.NGO, MSP/HNL/LAX-NRT on the Transpac flights, and NRT/NGO-MNL, NRT-HKG/PVG/SPN/GUM, and KIX-TPE on Interport. 8/03 was the last time we flew DTW-AMS, and 9/03 MSP-AMS. We may have flown them on a equipemnt-sub since then.

Nw's B-747 are flying all Asian flights. They are using A332 or DC-10's on some Atlantic routes and to Hawaii from DTW, MSP. B-727-300's are used to Hawaii from the west coast and Alaska.

UA will fly the B747 from IAD to FRA in the summer and also ORD to FRA in the summer. But as stated above most are all on Asian routes.

Right.. I meant not every single flight that's on that route is operated by a 747. My fault.. I should've worded that differently.

Also sorry I was focusing on east coast to London flights, but everyone else has already posted about FRA, SFO, etc.

Do you mean 757-300s? I did not think NW still used 727s.

From the US the 757-300 and DC-10 go to hawaii, and from Asia its the DC-10, 742, and 744.

I'm quite sure that when the IAD-LHR flights go 4 daily they were/are going to run 2x 763's and 2x 772's.

I'd have to say this is true because they are trying to free up 744's for more Asian flights!?

I may be wrong as I don't no much about UA's scheduling of aircraft.

I have just booked a flight from LHR to IAD in May after the schedule goes 4 daily and United's website is showing 2x763 and 2x772
