Die Hard 2

Wed May 31, 2000 2:17 am

I was just watching Die Hard 2 and I noticed that... The L-1011 has a 747 cockpit!! Why do people do that? If you are going to make a movie at least make it realistic!

LOL...I was watching it last night on HBO! The reason they do this is the average person doesnt know about aircraft interior. If at anytime I watch a movie with an airliner its always fun to look for the mistakes portrayed.

I lived in Washington when this movie came out and remember hearing that the Dulles Airport authorities were suing the producers of this movie because it made them appear incompetent... gee, I wonder why?

In many movies there are mistakes concerning aircrafts.
If you have seen The Usual Suspects (one of the best movies ever) in one part of the movie it shows the approach of a B-747 (either dusk or dawn) as it is coming towards the beginning of the runway for approach. Seconds later it shows another airplane (my guess is that it was a 767) from the behind as it touch down in the runway
Even though the scenery and the time (from the colors) seemed to be the same, my guess was that they had only one camera there so they filmed the 747 coming towards and then changed position and waited for the next aircraft coming to film the touch down.... which happened to be a twin-engine

Emmanuel

Another movie that has the same mistake is "Turbulence". It's a 742 with a 744 cockpit. I like the cockpit, but please, use the right cockpit.

I saw the first half of it last night and I was curious as to the type of plane that the terrorists crashed into the runway. The "British" one. It kinda looked like a 707 but the engines were wrong and it didn't look like a Boeing nose. Not an obvious DC-8 either. The engines looked CV-880-like, but it didn't look like this either. They also said there were 256 passengers or some similar number. OK, people. I realize it was only a model and not a real plane, but what type of plane was the model supposed to be? At least they seemed to get the number of aisles right throughout!

Come On People!

You mean that that is ALL you could find wrong!

How about the fact that there were ten aircraft sitting there with perfectly good radios! Couldn't the ATC have 'borrowed' an aircraft radio to warn the others?

How about the fuel dump valve in the pylon? Hand operated no less! Very useful in an emergency!

How about setting jet fuel on fire IN THE SNOW, and it tracking back up to an aircraft which was flying away at 120 kts+ and climbing!

I've always said that Bruce Willis makes the best comedies

But I am NOT BITTER! HONEST!

I might also point out that they showed the IAD runway layout wrong, they depicted IAD as the center of ATC for the Entire Mid Atlantic, and suggested that these aircraft had nowhere else to land and no other controllers they could talk to. What about DCA, BWI, MTN, ILG, Dover and Andrews Air Force Bases, RIC, MRB and a number of other possibilities. And Washington Center in Leesburg VA. covers this region.

Just Hollywood! reality sometimes doesn't make a good movie. Gregg in MD

Does anybody know the regs/owners of the aircrafts used in DH2? The 747 was in Evergreen livery if I remember it right ...

It was an Evergreen 747. I saw the airplane in March of 96 at Marana, Arizona. At the time it had the engines off and was grounded due to a AD that was out on the forward cargo door, I can't remember the name of the company that put it on. Sorry I don't have the tail number or photos. They frown on pictures at that airport.

My favorite was this old Battle of Britan film that I saw on cable once. Sorry but I don't remember the name. But there is this one sceen where fighter escorted German bombers are about to bomb London. They did a pretty good job of finding a suitible subsitute aircraft for the Heinkel 111. They used a CASA 2111, which was a Spanish built Heinkel with Merlin engines. They used Surpermarine Seafires as the fighter escorts. Painted in Luftwaffe markings of course. But then the sceen switches to the RAF base when the alarm goes off and all of the pilots rush out to their aircraft. Apparently the produces had to substitue with a Spanish aircraft again because the Spitfires where playing Germans. So they used CASA 2109's which are post war Merlin powered Messchermitt Me.109's

how about the airport looking a LOT like stapleton (hint)..and i like the idea of that drainage grate in the runway..or any of the underground tunnels....um...don't all planes with a glass cockpit also have analog gauges? why didn't the crew of the crashed plane see the difference?

Not Stapleton...

...but not a bad guess.

But, like all things Hollywood, it was in LA. These days, nearly every airport [in the movie world] looks just like the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX;

They could have at least covered up the PacTel logos on the telephones.
...three miles from BRONS, clear for the ILS one five approach...
