After AA Who Is The Largest Carrier In SJU

Fri Jan 27, 2006 10:25 am

I know AA has the largest presence at SJU, but who is next in line? For the matter who is second in the islands overall. Who flies to the most destinations and who carries the most people?

After AA, DL is probably the next largest airline at SJU, but they are insignificant compared with AA's presence.

It's probably either CO or US.

AA is -- by far -- the largest airline in the Caribbean basin, with the most destinations and the most passengers. No other airline even comes close.

I think US or DL is next. DL has 2 763s and 2 757s out of ATL, not to mention the 2 song flights out of both JFK and MCO. US has 2 762's out of CLT and a 333, 762, and 757 out of PHL

When I was in SJU in November, waiting 4 hours for our Delta flight, US had several more flights than Delta that arrived and departed.

Thats what I thought, US operates more widebodies than DL and also flies more flights to more cities.

Out of SJU US goes to:
PHL
PIT
CLT
BOS
FLL?
DCA?
LGA?

Now that I count up the seats, DL has over 500 seats more than US to SJU. I know a couple of those flights arrive at about the same time. I was at the Bacardi rum factory a couple of months ago and remember seeing a DL 763 landing and then a couple minutes later a song flight. So many of them might arrive and take off at the same time.

If you are interested, Caribbean Sun is number two on number of flights out of SJU with all of their Dash 8s. There are a lot of flights, but the capacity is a lot lower on each plane.

If anyone is interested, US Airways codeshares on Caribbean Sun flights to:
St. Thomas
St. Croix
Antigua
St. Martin,
St. Kitts
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

For international flights (no propeller/RJ, outside the inter-island services), CM may be the largest, they fly SJU twice daily.

You're coming from the U.S.? You realize that Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and therefore this would be a domestic flight, right?

Hey, that isn't as bad as this one.

I'm eating dinner at the airport restaurant in SJU and the guy in the next booth is talking about how he doesnt have a passport to get into the Dominican Republic (they weren't going to take his birth certificate). So he gets on his cell phone and starts calling people asking for the phone number to the US Embassy in Puerto Rico.

I didn't have the heart to tell him to find out where there was a passport office or that he might get further calling the office in Miami. It was five o'clock anyways, he was going to end up paying the DR Customs guy $50 US at least to get in that evening.

Um, yes. I know that Puerto Rico is part of the US. I have flown through SJU before. I've never used it as a port entry though.

When arriving from another country, I assume that you have to go through customs. Since The Netherlands Antilles is another country, I expect to go through customs upon arrival...

On peak times, customs is a pain. It will take you about 30-45 minutes to go through customs. There is a long walk from the gate (that is one of the biggest complains) to the customs clearance area.

US:

DL
MCO (13 weekly)

gives US a total of 54 weekly flts and DL 57

WRONG. [Use the edit button for corrections].
1) I don't see SJO in the whole thread until you mentioned it.
2) Also, don't see the word "international" routes in the initial thread.
This thread is about, as you said, "who is the largest carrier in SJU" after AA.

Based on Summer 2005 seat capacity the results are as follows:

American Airlines 61%
Delta Air Lines 7%
JetBlue Airways Corporation 6%
US Airways 5%
Continental Airlines 5%
Spirit Airlines 3%
ATA Airlines, Inc. 3%

% is percentage of seats in Puerto Rico

I would say that US is the behind AA and then DL and then B6, then CO.

There are some times in a day, where you would see 3 US planes landing in a row while there are 3 more holding in the taxyway for departure. US also codeshare flights with UAL. It started the FLL route but retired when it was restructuring the FLL hub. It might start it again, and hopefully one day it will do the much needed SJU-SDQ, that's only serviced by AA.

But really, US is second to AA for about 2 years, or at least since when they started their Boston saturday flight.

I will be flying San Juan to Albany, New York on 2 April.

Should I be looking at DL or US for the best connection, aircraft, service.

Connecting time should not be too tight along the way as I want to check out the airport (ATL, CLT, PHL)

My company is paying for the ticket so the price is not too much of a concern.

If you're looking for quickest, the answer is actually none of the above. Continental's quickest connection at 5 hours, 46 minutes (SJU-476-EWR-2314-ALB, 738/ER3) leaves San Juan at noon, arrives in Newark at 4:03 PM, departs Newark at 4:45 PM, and arrives in Albany at 5:46 PM. (second and third are also Continental flights, at 6:23 long, with them leaving at 3:42 AM* and 7:45 AM respectively). Looking at other airlines, the second-quickest is US Airways at 6:27 (SJU-1427-PHL-2588-ALB, 762/CRJ), leaving San Juan at 12:45 PM, arriving in Philadelphia at 4:48 PM, departing Philadelphia at 5:55 PM, and arriving in Albany at 7:12 PM. One minute slower is United via Northern Virginia (SJU-1065-IAD-7806-ALB, 320/ER4), departing San Juan at 4:43 PM, arriving in Northern Virginia at 8:43 PM, departing Northern Virginia at 9:45 PM, and arriving in Albany at 11:11 PM. If you're one of those people who has issues with any non-mainline plane, then US Airways has an all-mainline connection at 6 hours, 31 minutes, connecting in Philadelphia (SJU-1024-PHL-4-ALB, 333/734), leaving San Juan at 2:30 PM, arriving in Philadelphia at 6:30 PM, departing Philadelphia at 7:55 PM, and arriving in Albany at 9:01 PM, and an added bonus is your opportunity to futz around with the PTV's of US Airways' Airbus A-330-300's.

*Yes, that is a 3:42 AM departure from San Juan. Note that Daylight Savings Time is something totally foreign to the island of Puerto Rico, and therefore the city of San Juan, however, departures at that time of the morning are not recommended for the faint-of-heart.

Remember that CO, B6 flying from BQN and PSE too.

CO BQN x 1 daily to EWR
PSE x 1 daily to EWR

B6 BQN x 2 daily to JFK
PSE x 1 daily to JFK

My opinion is the largest airlines in Puerto Rico are Continental and Jet blue. Covering all island airport.

From the official DOT Order:

"US Airways’ application offers substantial capacity and service to new beyond-perimeter cities. However, we find that US Airways is clearly the dominant carrier at DCA, which weighs against it on § 41718(a)(2). In the case of San Francisco, US Airways could provide online connection service from DCA to as many as 20 domestic points. However, eight of those 20 points are already served one-stop from DCA via one or more of US Airways’ within-perimeter hubs and/or via code-share with United, via United’s within-perimeter hub at Chicago O’Hare. The eight points account for 88 percent of the total traffic generated in the 20 total potential connecting markets. In the case of San Juan, the Department finds that there are almost no network benefits; the additional beyond-perimeter points available via San Juan are already served on a single connection basis via US Airways’ within-perimeter hubs. We also note that US Airways is not a low-fare competitor."

Those things that have changed have probably changed for the negative though. US Airways has gone from having no beyond-perimeter exemptions to being the leading perimeter-exemption-holder at National (three flights to Phoenix, one to Las Vegas) and is likely to lose one or two of those Phoenix slots, and possibly the Las Vegas slot as well, due to the aforementioned arguments. In all likelyhood, those slots will go through the application process again, and what actually will happen is anyone's guess.

They called it a focus city towards the end. 5 or 6 daily from JFK, along with BOS, STL, MCO, LAX and I think FLL.

Didn't they have connecting service from SJU to AUA and SXM too? I know they applied for SJU-CCS but that never materialized.
