Belgrade Nikola Tesla Intl Airport?

Sat Jan 28, 2006 7:04 am

Folks, this is my first post in this distinguished forum ...  Wink and I'm glad to join fellow enthusiasts from our region and around the world.

Serbian media has reported tonight that the Board of Directors of Belgrade Airport (BEG/LYBE) has decided to name it after Nikola Tesla, the scientist and inventor in this 150th anniversary year of his birth. The decision is contingent upon governmental approval. So, you all think it's gonna happen?

I think it would be a wonderful idea!

Dobrodosao!

I think that name 'Tesla' fits better than 'Surcin' (a name of a nearby village). If only the airport's and JAT's management had someone with 1 percent of Tesla's intellectual capacity...  cry

KLM does not operate a flight into Belgrade. You can choose from:

-Lufthansa
-Air France
-Austrian
-Swiss
-CSA
-Alitalia ... when not on strike  Wink
-BA
-and of course JAT

Any chance of any long haul routes from Belgrade? Why doesnt JAT operate any long haul?

Im suprised there is no long haul carriers at all serving Belgrade.

I think Delta should have taken Belgrade in it's trans-atlantic expansion, but I'm no specialist.
I guess I'll be another person to say dobrodosao. I used to live in BEG changing the airport name to Nikola Tesla would be a great idea.

Tesla was one of the most genious physists worldwide !
For obvious resons many of his inventions were never published, since they were a threat to the traditional power-companies and energy-monopolists.
A great idea to give this genious à deserved memory.I hope Belgrade Airport does better than Tesla's fame ...

A "little birdie" from Nemanjina Street has hinted to me that Airport Belgrade is now "Belgrade - Nikola Tesla International"; two signatures away, just paperwork; all approvals obtained and all blessings received from the Government.... but lets get it official.

Nice idea to give it a name of someone so important to the science world. It has a good sound to it "Tesla International"  Smile Also its easier to say for foreigners than Surcin.
Other operators to Belgrade are Montenegro Airlines, Olympic and Aeroflot. Also Turksih are comming back and maybe Tunisair?

I heard THY already arrived with A320. As for Tunisair, they are currently only flying to Monastir, but I guess they will fly both to Tunis and Monastir in the summer season.

Also, I've heard that KLM is returning in March. I guess their last flight was back in 1991.

A million dollar question. For the short period of time, Uzbekistan used Belgrade as a stop on their JFK service and they had a code-share agreement with JAT. JAT has no equipment for long haul as their last DC-10 was sold last summer and is now getting rusty in France (sorry JoKeR; I know it beaks your heart  biggrin  ). There are rumors that JAT will lease some 767-200s and start its North American service in May, but as far as I'm concerned, these are just rumours and I won't classify them as news.

What makes me wonder is whether any of the Chinese airlines would start flying to BEG. Chinese community in Serbia is getting bigger and there must be a good demand that could make those flights profitable.

Delta used to have an office in Belgrade in the "good-old days". In fact, those were old Pan Am office that Delta inherited after the bankrupcy of the famous airline. I'd love to see them in BEG, but being currently under Chapter 11 and having a shortage of planes, I suppose they will probably go for some code-share agreement with their partners in Sky (Alitalila and Air France).

Concernig transatlantic routes after the haitus...

...with the arrival of two Boeing 767-200 aircraft JAT's general director has announced that flights to North America will start again on May 15th, 2006 for the first time in 16 years. He says JAT is determined to start these two routes to New York and Toronto and the government of Serbia & Montenegro is signing the final agreements with the U.S. Civil Aviation Department. No details of frequency or scheduled times are available as yet.

time will tell...

I hope it happens. The 762 would be the ideal aircraft for the routes with a relativley small capacity in a two class config. Its about time Belgrade had at least a couple of long haul routes. I wish Jat well, fingers crossed it happens.

Howdy guys.

It's official!

http://www.srbija.sr.gov.yu/vesti/vest.php?id=20305

Excerpt (3rd paragraph):
"The government also passed a Decision to pass a recommendation to the temporary managing board of Belgrade Airport to change its name to Nikola Tesla Airport".

There's no mention of 'International' or 'Belgrade', so we'll have to wait and see what the full name will be.

It's me, again.

At the Belgrade Airport web site, which is yet to be updated, there is a suggested name "Belgrade - Nikola Tesla".

Check: http://www.beg.aero/code/navigate.php?Id=63

I'll make a wild guess about the final version:
"Belgrade - Nikola Tesla International" (BEG / LYBE).

If they really leave what's in this piece of news: "Belgrade - Nikola Tesla" (BEG / LYBE).

Anyway, it sounds better than Surcin.

I flew thru BEG in the late 80's and let me tell you there wasn't that much of a difference between the airport and the main train station.
There aren't that many popular serbians that I know of and naming BEG after Tesla would sure improve Serbia & Montenegro image.
I don't know how feasible is for an U.S. airline to fly to BEG now, as BEG is outside the B757 range from EWR/JFK for CO/DL/AA? and a B767 yeararound service might be too much to star with.
JAT flying to JFK/EWR and YYZ would sure do good.
Where is the largest concentration of Serbs in the U.S. now? Is it in NYC or in CLE, DTW, PIT or ORD?
I don't work for COPA Airlines!
