SAS Braathens Flights Still Disrupted

SAS Braathens flights still disrupted
The Norwegian unit of Scandinavian Airlines said it would cancel about one in 10 flights on Friday because pilots, upset by plans for a new system of pay talks, were calling in sick for a fifth day.

"We expect to cancel about 40 flights today," SAS Braathens spokeswoman Siv Meisingseth said. The Norwegian unit has about 440 departures every day.

A Thursday evening meeting between SAS Braathens management and SAS pilots at Oslo's Gardermoen International Airport did not lead to an agreement.

SAS Braathens information adviser Knut Morten Johansen said that the meeting was characterized by positive dialog, but Jack Netskar, head of the SAS Norway's pilot's union, did not agree.

"The flight chaos in Norway will continue. If management doesn't start thinking differently, we will go to court," Netskar told Aftenposten.

SAS cancelled up to a third of flights in Norway earlier this week but says it is better organized to cope with absent pilots. About 100 pilots out of 800 have called in sick in what started as an apparent sympathy action with striking Danish pilots. The Danish pilots went back to work on Wednesday.

Norway's Labor-led government has accused SAS Braathens pilots of abusing a generous sick-leave system to stage a wildcat strike.

The Norwegian pilots' union denies it is striking, which would be illegal, but accuses SAS of reneging on a 2004 deal under which management agreed to negotiate pay centrally.

SAS now wants each of its units - in Sweden, Denmark and Norway - to negotiate pay with unions separately.

Tuesday next week there is expected to get worse when the talks between the pilots and SAS Braathens starts again.

Honestly I think a centralized pay system is something that needs to be enforced. One of the scary things about localizing pay is the ability for SK to cut benefits and salaries because its "not across the board".

In this situation I agree with the pilots but they need to make it a strike or publicly address the situation and not make it a "Pilot Cut Day" thing.

Norwegian (DY) are expecting two more aircrafts in their fleet shortly. Bringing the number of aircrafts to 16.
They also just announced that they will buy one of the 16 aircrafts and decrease the number of leased planes by one.

I don't think this means unreasonable cuts to anyone because the administration of pay is centralized. There has been discussion in this forum about SAS hiring Chinese flight attendants. I am sure that what they were offered is right and reasonable given that they were homebased and living in Mainland China. To offer them the pay of an FA living in Denmark (like the unions claim that SAS should do), would likely make them millionaires in terms of purchasing power, and I don't think that is right either.

If the cost of e.g. health insurance was covered by the government in Norway, but had to be covered as a direct cost to Swedish employees by SAS in Sweden, does it seem right to you that Norwegian and Swedish employees should be compensated equally on a gross (or pre-tax) basis? I just don't think so.

"Not across the board" makes sense, and is more fair, if you ask me.

Am I right in assuming that Wideroe, although owned by SAS, has been unaffected by all of this at least from a labor point of view?

really a good airline ,i use them often since the fusion of Braathens with Sas.But i guess they need more than 16 airplanes since now they run an intensive network around Europe and domestic network in Norway is a little weak now in days. They use to have a direct flight from TOS to Trondheim and BODØ but now only OSL is available

Hi!

It is a a little bit of sad feeling that I see SAS Braathens passing these bad moments. I learned to respect since many years ago Braathens ( then Braathens SAFE ) and infact the feeling of that airline was "Braathens IS SAFE to fly!!!". When I was a young teenager and a truly fanatic enthusiast I used to see Braathens 737's passing by LIS on their way to Madeira Islands or to Canary islands. But I had my day last September when I had the chance to fly them from LIS to OSL. I really enjoyed Braathens SAS, the plane was still in full Braathens livery, simple but distinctive the way to show Norway! I guess that Braathens now beeing part of SAS might lose the true "norwegian spirit" so it looks to me that Norwegian is taking that lead....is that right? I would like to ear our norwegian friends on this! When I was waiting for my flight back from OSL I could see some pretty good activity from Norwegian with flights comming and going!
Regards

You are correct. WF operates totally separate from SK. Some codeshares, but other than that, a completely separate operation.

I believe that there is an airway infection that is causing all the SAS pilots to be ill  Wink

Seriously. All the delays today are due to bad weather here in Norway. Only 2 cancellations announced this evening.

Norwegian (DY) is growing and growing rapidly as an important Norwegian carrier, serving 35 European destinations nonstop from Oslo (OSL) and many from Bergen (BGO), Stavanger (SVG) and Trondheim (TRD) too.

Well, unless you're flying Business or Economy Flex be prepared for a truly uneventful and lousy flight. SAS offers absolutely nothing, not even a cup of water, to passengers seated in regular Economy unless you are willing to pay ridiculously high prices for it. My suggestion is that you eat well before the flight, and bring a bottle of water.
