Vaso Airlines

Does anyone have any info on this airline? Routes? Charter or Scheduled?

Also, anyone know why their fleet's been flying Almost Plain White for such a while...?

Hi Vasu

VASO is associated with the Voronezh Aircraft Factory, sometimes also referred to as airplane factory number 64.

The airlines name is actually just the acronym of the full name of the plant (Voronezhskoe Aktsionernoe Samoletostroitel'noe Obchestvo, according to jp 2005/06).

Apart from the obvious An-12 a Russian aircraft plant typically uses for hauling parts and tools around, VASO also ventured into the passenger business with a fleet of six Il-86. That choice is easy to explain as VASO / Factory 64 is the plant which actually built all the 103 Il-86s of the series production (as a reminder, Ilyushin Design Bureau was the designer and only built the two prototypes CCCP-86000 and CCCP-86001 before assigning the production run to Voronezh). And quite probably, VASO ended up with a few units available that were returned from previous owners...

With many Russian aircraft plants and heavy maintenance factories, it is not uncommon to make use of "white tails" by flying them commercially instead of parking them unused on the premisses. As far as VASOs ops are concerned, I have seen the airline operate out of Moscow Sheremetjevo II to "classic" sunseeker destinations in the Mediterranean, Turkey, the Middle East and the likes.

The current fleet of VASO is reported at one An-12 (RA-48984) and six Il-86 (RA-86065, RA-86066, RA-86115, RA-86123, RA-86140, RA-86141).

Cheers, Lukas
