Thai Airways - not sure about the 777s with the retrofitted Business Class, but on all of the ones I've flown on, Econ has been 10 abreast.

Thai Airways does on their 777's  Smile

I don't think the 200ER's (on order) will have 10 abreast as they will be used on long haul routes (although the 773 to ATH does)  Smile

Question is how many would a British charter airline like ThomsonFly put in a 777? 3-5-3?

Varig has 10 abreast as well on their ex-BA 777. I flew on one of those and let me tell you it was quite uncomfortable compared to their Md11

Cheers!

JL 777s are all nine-abreast.
NH's domestic 773s are all ten-abreast while the 772s have both nine- & ten-abreast types; the newest four 772s being ten-abreast.

Has anyone been on EK 777 with 10 abreast? If so, is it really a noticeable difference from the 9 abreast used by other carriers?

I know EK has often been ranked high for their service, that's why I'm wondering.

I have been on EK 777 with 10 abreast. The great leg room more than makes up for this.

According to the Thai website, http://www.thaiairways.com/Travel_De...ion/Aircraft_Seatmaps/default.htm, some 772s have 3-4-3 and some have 3-3-3, while all 773s have 3-3-3.

I´ve been on an EK 777 (10 abreast; DXB-BKK-DXB) and an AF 777 (9 abreast; CDG-PEK-CDG), everytime I was in an aisle seat and someone sat next to me.

I didn´t feel any difference and I´d take the EK 777 anyday again.

British Airways had 3-4-3 in the days of "AML" out of Gatwick. A chater outfit operating on British Airways planes, in British Airways colours and uniform and using British Airways facilities on the ground. Company was run by the wife of ex. CEO, Robert Ayling.

Now, British Airways Tripsevs are all 3-3-3 - the way a Tripsev should be.

Recently flew from DXB to BHX in an EK772, the 10 abreast was fine although I struggled a bit with the leg room. Being 187cm and sitting next to the window the IFE box was right in front and so didn't really have the ability to spread my legs out.

I had flown the A345 on the previous leg from SYD to DXB and certainly didn't feel any difference compared to the 772.

10 abreast in 3-4-3 config is MUCH better than UA's 2-5-2 config. I would NEVER ever want to sit in the middle seat! The one time I've flown UA's 777 i was so lucky to get a window seat (we were a group of students and could not choose our seats). I would have refused to fly on that plane in the middle seat.

By reducing seat and aisle width. 10 across has ~17" seat bottoms as opposed to 18.5"+ seat bottoms in 9 abreast.

One reason to expect 787's in 9 abreast to be more comfortable than the 777 in 10 abreast is that going from 8 abreast to 9 abreast is a greater relative capacity increase than going from 9 to 10 abreast, which means a greater pitch increase would be possible while maintain same capacity. If you start with 31" or 32" pitch and increase seat number by one, you can give an extra 4" of pitch on a 787 compared to 3" on 777 while maintaining same overall capacity. Another reason to expect the 787 to be more comfortable is that the seat bottom should be wider by 0.2-0.4" depending on how much the aisle width is reduced due to the proportionally wider cabin of the 787 over the 777.

BA got complaints about the lack of room on the 3-4-3 configured AML 777s, but EK win awards! I guess AML didn't have the legroom. There's no noticeable difference between 9 and 10 abreast on the 777, I've also flown the MD11 ten abreast on Finnair and it's completely fine.

What rubbish. The middle seat on a 2-5-2 configured 777 (or DC10 etc) is better than a windown seat on any 3-3 narrowbody or 3-4-3 on a 747, cos there's two people to climb over to get to the aisle, but you have two alternatives, left or right, whereas in a window you can only get out one way. Gripe about narrowbody window seats before you gripe about the middle seat on 2-5-2, otherwise you're being illogical.

Well some people consider the window to be compensation well worth the inconvenience of climbing over two people.

Have also flown Emirates on a 777 with 3-4-3 seating, hated it
and was glad to return on one of their A330's
Also on United, 2-5-2 but thankfully got a window seat!

Another question: who is willing to pay more money if airlines offer wider seats or seats with more seat pitch?
If there is an airline offering a trip 5 or 10 Euro cheaper, people choose the cheaper airline. Nobody cares about the wider seats or the bigger seat pitch (as long as they are not in the plane and having thrombosis problems).

MH f.e. has 86 cm seat pitch instead of (average) 79 cm. But who pays for that? Everybody wants to have cheaper flights with more and more comfort - but that doesn't work.

Air France has 3x3x3 in the "Classic" B772ER & B773ER.

Starting June 2006, AF will fit some new B773ER, ordered recently, with a high density configuration (and 3x4x3 in Y). These aircraft will be based at ORY and will replace the 4 remaining B743 on flights to PTP & FDF, and later to RUN.

I disagree 100%. A window seat no matter what configuration is better than any middle seat. On a window seat I don't have to wrestly for the arm rest on one of the sides and I can lean against the wall. The fact that I can enjoy the view outside rather than my fellow passenger's body warmth also goes without saying. I really don't care about how many people I have to climb over to get to the isle because I usually don't leave my seat more than once or twice on a 12 hour flight. On a transatlantic flight, I almost never leave my seat.

Biggest advantage in 2-5-2 is, that there is only 1 person per row where you have to climb over 2 seats. Ok, so when you sit totally in the middle, you have the (as we in Germany say) "Asshole card".

Saudi Arabian Airlines have 9 abreast (2-5-2) on their T7's. Somehow the seats seem to be generously proportioned.

I had to sit in the middle seat of 5 for a 2 hour flight once and it wasn't bad at all. Legroom does tend to be generous though.

For some reason I found the BA set-up cramped in comparison.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

2-5-2 is obviously better than 3-4-3 as there's one less seat across and four people in each row get to benefit from the nice two-seat sections on each side. Yeah it would be terrible if you got stuck in the middle of the 5, but you just have to not let that happen. It's not that hard to avoid in most cases.

I hated EK's 10-abreast but it had more to do with the quality of the seats themselves than the seat width. The seats were hard and uncomfortable and the horrible plastic lumbar-support piece was jutting into my back the whole flight on one of the flights. Although I did also notice the decrease in width, unlike some others here. And I didn't see where all the extra legroom is that people always mention. Not to mention that service was basically nonexistent on each of four intercontinental flights.

So I always wonder where all this good hype about EK comes from......
