This weekend, I had the pleasure to do some east (CMH) to west (PSP) to east (CMH) travel in the US. I chose Delta for my trip, which included B738 and MD-88 machinery.
I recently travelled a lot within the US, and I have a lot of postive things to say about delta. 100% on time, very convenient connections in ATL, very friendly FA's, free lunchbox on the ATL-PSP leg (was asked to pay 5$ or so for that crap on AA and NWA), clean planes, decent fare. what else could you ask for? Well, a decent meal, but who offers such things these days. Air France does, but who else?
Anyways, I had the chance to compare passenger comfort in the 738's and MD-88's. I sampled rear seats and close to first seats in both planes. In terms of passenger comfort, I'd say the MD-88 wins clearly. Unless you are sitting in the last four or five rows, it is SOOO much more quiet! I also like the 3-2 seating. From a passenger perspective, rear mounted engines are just superb, that at least is my opinion, and I wish there was a modern variant of the VC-10.
If I could choose, I'd go for a MD-8X anytime and let the eco-wonders (B73X, A32X) sit on the tarmac. I'd even prefer a DC-9, which I was glad to sample a couple of times with NWA recently.
Does anybody share my enthusiasm?
